Hi I had my first face to face visit with my ms nurse yesterday and it was really positive meeting. I asked her if she had any material for my son as he understands mummy has a sore leg but doesn’t understand the other symptoms as you can’t see them. She gave me a lot of MS help booklets Working with MS, MS explained, MS for young people, How to speak to you kids about MS and Kids guide to MS. So I have plenty reading material to keep me busy over the weekend. Last night when my son was in bed and it was story time I decided to read with him Kids guide to MS. I must say the book was a fantastic way to explain to my 8 year old, the book was filled with funny illustrations and things for my son to try to experience some of the sensations I do. He even laughed when it described the prickly feelings some of us get is like having ants in our pants. If you anyone does has young children I would definitely recommend asking your MS nurse for this material. Even to have a look over it to see if it’s something you feel can help when explaining MS to your children. Polly x
Hi
My children are 14, 12 and 10, are they too old for the kids guide to ms?

Hi ellie
that’s fab thanks. My children have been with me from day one in my journey through this weirdness! I’ve always made light of it and have always used humour as a coping mechanism!
It’s hard to know what exactly they know about it as we’ve never really had an in depth conversation. I think I’ll be phoning my ms nurse monday to get the book.
Thanks again

Hi freckles I got 2 guides kids guide to ms and the young person guide to MS that one says it for 10-16 year olds. My son is 8 so the nurse advised I could use either. My mum on the way back from the hospital read the kids guide and found the way it described symptoms more clearer so I agree with Ellie I think anyone could read them. I’d ask your nurse for them both then you can have a read of them first. Polly x
Hi
Just to let you know - these booklets can be ordered direct and free, from the MSTrust www.mstrust.org.uk. If your kids are a little older the MS Trust booklet ‘The young person’s guide to MS’ is targetted at 10-16 year olds.
The MS Society produces two story books for younger children ‘Our Mum makes the best cakes’ and ’ Our Dad makes the best boats’ and a short video featuring two puppets talking about MS ‘Annie & Dan talk about MS’. These can be ordered for free from the Publications section of this website.
Your MS Society Branch Support volunteer may also have a supply of these books and videos - I am a volunteer for the Reading branch and keep a small supply myself.
Take care
Hilary
