Just a thought.

Hi all, this is a question for the ladies on here really. But I was wondering if there could possibly be a link with my severe depression and the coil? Although my mood was low before I had it fitted last June, it has got a lot worse since and as you know, has spiraled out of control in the last couple of months. What do you think? xxx

Yes on web FDA says its a side effect.xx

This is the Mirena, yes? If so, I had a really bad time with it. GP kept telling me that it could not possibly affect me as the hromones wouldn’t travel further than the uterus & ovaries, but at the same time they said it would cure my endo. It didn’t. It made me feel really odd and bizarrely depressed, like random PMT out of nowhere.

At the time I couldn’t find any evidence to support my feeling that it was altering my mood, other than lots of personal accounts on the internet of course. In the end I had it removed along with my ovaries and uterus. Felt great as soon as I woke up from the op, then a year of stable mood (started low dose oestorgen only HRT) Felt like a normal person for the first time since puberty.

However, I wouldn’t recommend it as I then got lesion on my spinal cord leading to MS dx. I wonder if it was the op and ovary removal that caused it to trigger, so I heartily regret it now.

Hi, no, it’s not the Mirena, it’s called the Jaydess. It’s like the Mirena, but smaller and releases half the amount of hormones xxx

I found that depression and changes in mood are listed as a side effects of Mirena on this page. I pressed X on the top right corner when the page asked me to choose USA or UK site.

"Mirena (levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device) is a form of birth control that is indicated for intrauterine contraception for up to 5 years and for the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding in women. Mirena is a hormone-releasing system placed in your uterus to prevent pregnancy for up to 5 years and should be inserted by a trained healthcare provider. The most common side effects of Mirena are missed periods (amenorrhea), bleeding and spotting between periods, heavier bleeding during the first few weeks after device insertion, abdominal/pelvic pain, ovarian cysts, back pain, headache/migraine, nervousness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, bloating, breast tenderness or pain, weight gain, changes in hair growth, acne, depression, changes in mood, loss of interest in sex, itching or skin rash, and puffiness in the face, hands, ankles, or feet. a bit off the subject but my coil (35 years ago) caused pain to my husband.

he said it hurt him during sex.

i said “come on it’s not that big!”
