I was just diagnosed in September so this whole ms journey is still quite new to me. I’m currently reading the wahl’s protocol and I’m finding it really interesting. I’ve always had quite a healthy lifestyle and have been trying to eliminate processed foods for a while now. As last few months I’ve also been trying to cut out gluten and it’s sooo hard! There’s gluten in everything. Where I’m trying to adopt a lot of the principles of wahls I’m not quite ready to give it my 100%. I’m still trying to get my head around having ms and don’t feel I have the willpower needed at the minute. I’m also trying to stop smoking so one thing at a time!
I saw my GP recently and told him I was trying to go gluten free. He said “is your life not hard enough at the minute without making it more difficult for yourself”. So it’s hard to know what to do for the best!
Give up smoking, for sure. Once you’ve given up smoking, which will have proven and huge benefits, you can think of giving up other things where the benefits are much more dubious.
I notice there are no posts since January 2015 from those who have followed the Wahls Protocol, telling us that they are completely cured! Isn’t it obvious that following a healthy diet, with little or no unhealthy carbs or fats, will ensure that anyone (with or without MS) will feel a lot better physically? I am very sceptical of anyone who says you can cure MS with their diet, lifestyle, or whatever else. Surely if it were that simple, many would have been cured by now and there’d be no need for research to find a cure? Of course you have more energy when you reduce your intake of unhealthy fats and carbohydrates, it takes a lot of your energy to digest these! Not only that, but if you begin the “Protocol” as an overweight person, it will obviously ensure that you lose weight, and if you carry less weight guess what - it is easier to move and get about, because you don’t need as much energy to do physical things. Personally, as a carer for my husband who has PPMS, I find it offensive that anyone out there should even suggest that MS can be cured by changing your diet and lifestyle - that would seem to imply that it is your diet and lifestyle that have caused you to have MS, which we all know is utter rubbish, and can be very hurtful to someone who is struggling enough just to get through each day. By all means try to follow a healthy diet, exercise as much as is possible for you, get fresh air, try to avoid stressful situations, and if you need to, try to reduce your weight. Whatever you do, try to find ways to do things that can lift your spirits, even the smallest of happy times make life worth living. I, mostly, follow the OMS diet. I find the science behind it kind of compelling, i.e. the immune system responses in related to saturated vs polyunsaturated fats. It makes sense to me and the research I’ve done backs it up BUT I don’t pretend to be an expert in these things and I’m pretty well aware that I’m far from it. My neuro does also seem to think that low saturated fat is a good idea and certainly low salt (that one is backed up by science AFAIK). FWIW I have no idea if it’s affected my MS progression but I do feel pretty good, I’ve also never been overweight so that isn’t a factor for me and I’ve always been phyiscally active. What I do find slightly worrysome is that a few of the MS diets seem to contradict each other which goes some way to giving me doubts. I don’t think I’ll be able to cure MS by following OMS but I hope that I can slow down progression, it’s one of those things that you can’t really prove that the diet is making a difference though due to the unpredictable disease progression path. It’s also rather difficult to prove through clinical studies, you can’t do a trial saying “we think that saturated fat is bad so we’re going to give this group lots and this group little and see who fares best” as that’s unethical. The OMS book is also free by the way, although they do indeed run retreats… I do most certainly think that there’s a lot about diet that we don’t yet understand, not only for people with MS but the wider population also.
I am about to give this diet a go. I have no problems removing starches and glutens. Dairy may be difficult - as I like milk in my coffee, but can always try almond milk or something (not soy). I am 48 and about to file for a TDP and retire from work because I can’t survive a single day without taking 100MG of Modafinil Mylan (basically speed). I do NOT want to be dependent upon such drugs to function. Would love to work out, but have no energy to do so. I try to force myself out but more often than not, the fatigue wins. A diet that increases energy levels is quite enticing to say the least. Aside from some urinary issues, has anyone had either extremely GOOD or surprising/unexpected results or, adversely, surprisingly BAD ones?
I have had MS for 15 years but didn’t know I had it until I had a big relapse after giving birth. I only made a partial recovery from this relapse. After leaving a very abusive relationship just over 6 months ago I finally (2 yrs later) found the time to look into ways I could help manage my MS. Immediately I cut out gluten. I don’t know if its because I left an abusive relationship (so didn’t feel so stressed daily) or because I cut out gluten, but I suddenly had masses more energy.
Further research has taken me to find the Wahls protocol which I started to put into place a few weeks ago, but being a vegetarian I have had to do the transition gently. I stated eating more greens and cut down my starch intake (which was massive) immediately. Then I started eating meat and as I write this I have my first bone broth on the hob. I still haven’t finished The Wahls protocol book because I am now bringing a 2 yr old up on my own which limits the amount of free time I have. I do plan to put into place EMS.
I have already noticed some of my symptoms improve but I am getting new ones. I unfortunately can’t get stress out of my life right now. I left my abusive relationship as my husband started abusing our daughter. Now to get to me he is now taking me to court for custody. I put the stress down to my new symptoms, but hope that through stress management techniques and mastering more of the Wahls diet I can improve my health.
Hey. I’ve been constantly ill with colds since Christmas so at the very least a bone broth is supposed to help deter and help get better colds.
