Intention Tremor Treatment

Hi everyone, Has anyone had any suchess in managing tremor? Its driving my hubbie crazy, tried lots of different treatments; Tegretol and gabapentin. Also tried lycra, weights, you name it! Been recently prescribed Isoniazid and just wondered if anyone has had any success? It’s so bad even considered DBT but neuro not keen. Thanks in advance, it’s so limiting and disabling.

As far as I know there is NO good treatment for intention tremor.
If there was I would be demanding it.
Having suffered for the last two years I have mentioned it to MS Nurse and Neuro, and they just change the subject.
I have heard that some people have tried beta-blockers, but there seems to be no good evidence that they have any effect.
I cannot see that DBT would be any use at all - it is a solution for some psychological problems, not nervous system ones.

Having written the above, I went searching and found this:

Do note that it is a few years old.

Thank you Geoff, I will have a look. Given that it can be so debilitating, I’m suprised at the lack of research/progress in this area. I think any medication is ‘off licence’ so just your luck if it works or not. Fingers crossed the latest ones might provide some relief! Thanks again

I have taken a good look at the medication that Barts were suggesting …

The side effects could be serious, and my conclusion is NOT FOR ME!

Hi there, I have intention tremor in my left hand and the only thing I have found useful to stop it is alcohol, stops it altogether but I’m aware you can’t rely on that all the time

That’s brilliant, finally a good excuse to drink alcohol. ‘It’s medicinal!’

Yes, alcohol does work a treat…tremor not so bad on a Friday and Saturday Night! 3 weeks on Isoniazid and so far so good. Certainly dampened the tremor down with no obvious side effect. Bloods done in a week and if all well up the dose. Fingers crossed!

Thanks for this link Geoff, so pleased to have discovered the post, it’s really interesting. My intention tremor is in my right (dominant) hand and is far and away my most troubling symptom. It is threatening my ability to work or be able to get another job if I wanted to. The registrar at my annual neurology appointment was fairly despondent about the possibilities for treatment so I’m pretty much stuck with ever increasing doses of propranolol. She dissuaded me from gabapentin as it can impact the cognitive side of things, which I already have quite enough issues with thank you very much!

It’s definitely worth mentioning the Levetiracetam to the ms nurses I reckon, once I’ve shown I’ve given the propranolol a fighting chance on higher doses. Thank you again for posting this very interesting bit of info.

Sorry for my ignorance but what’s DBT?

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy

Dreamed up in the late 1980s to treat borderline Personality Disorder, and suicidal tendencies.

You can see how it might be useful for intention tremor, can’t you?

However, it does make money for the one firm licenced to train folk in it: http://www.dbt-training.co.uk/

Ahh, I thought that was what DBT was, just checking there isn’t a new treatment by the same name. Maybe it was a typo for dbs…
