In dwelling and super pubic catheters, I need some help please

Hi,

I have been fitted with an in dwelling catheter 3 weeks ago. I am now on my second UTI - and it’s not nice at all!

If anyone out there has experience and can give me some advice I would be so grateful. Is super pubic catheters any better for example?

Yours

Marty

Hi, you’ve got me right in the throws of problems with spc. I’ve had spc for 11 years.

Around 90% of that time, it’s been fantastic and I’ve recommended it highly.

But the last 2 years, it has been quite bad. I have thought about having it removed…but…the alternative would mean being changed every few hours, possibly becoming sore and not being able to go out for more than around 3 hours.

What’s my problem? Bypassing…some days once, some days/nights 8!

Botox isnt helping…had 2 lots. I may have a uti…awaiting test results.

I had an in dwelling for 5months…very uncomfortable.

Being paraplegic and needing carers for so much, means I’m between a rock and a hard place!

I came on here to ask this exact question!

I’ve had indwelling for 12 months with no problems. I have been offered suprapubic. Should I go for it? The community nurse I spoke to was really pro getting one. I’ve just watched a YouTube video and the sight of it made me feel queasy.

What are the pros and cons of it?

Thanks all

Hi Poll (Yorkshire Girl)

Long time since I’ve ‘spoke’ with you (might not remember over these different forum systems. As in my user name I’ve been here since 2005!)

So you SPC was better for you. Apart from the last 2 years did you get many UTIs? A bad one put me in hospital - which was horrific - a few weeks ago.

Hiya

Thanks so much for replying to me. Why do you want to change systems? I would stick with what you have if there are no problems. Don’t you get UTIs from it, even on catheter changing? Oh how often is yours changed by the way?

Marty

Hi Marty

I get a change every 3 months or so.

I have never had an infection. I used to self catheterise and was on prophylactic antibiotics for about three or four years. I spoke to my doctor and said I don’t want to take this any more and they prescribed me a drug called Hiprex which works in the same way but is not an actual antibiotic. When I got my catheter, I asked if I should stop taking it because I’m not intermittently catheterising anymore and they said no so I carried on and I think that is why I have no infections.

The reason I want to change systems is because I want more sexual experience and it makes me feel a bit grim where it is now.

Can I ask you, do you have a suprapubic catheter? I want to talk to people that have one because I’ve watched Youtube videos and it makes me feel a bit sick but will the payoff be worth it?

Many thanks

Hiya

I am glad you have had no UTIs - there sooooooooo horrible!

No I don’t have SPC it’s an indwelling one and I’m looking for the best way forward. I can’t believe that the indwelling system was designed in 1930s and has plenty of faults. It’s nearly a hundred years old!

Marty

Hi, the spc is a foley and hasnt changed for eons either!

I have a uti now but dont get them a lot. The bypassing is a real pain.

Hopefully on the up now and the antibiotics will sort itout.
