I’ve tested an amazing wheelchair today which I would like to get as I think it will absolutely change my life.
It’s a lot of money though. I can put some towards it, am going to crowdfund some, but am also wondering if any of you know of any charities I can apply to for funding? I used to work for the civil service and they have a charity so I’m going there but any others would be welcome. Thanks
As you’re an ex Civil Servant, you can apply to their pension scheme. They will help you if you qualify.
Otherwise, the PIP mobility element will pay for the very best wheelchair, powerchair scooter of your choice.
Hi Tingly, I’m sorry for the misunderstanding. My cognition is far worse & I missed your question!
My earlier suggestion stems from experience with my eldest brother. He needed a pricey item that he could not afford. He wrote to his Company Pension Admin and asked for help. To our surprise, they keep an ‘emergency’ fund for their retired members, and they bought the item for him (£1100) and no repayment needed.
We were told most Pension Funds have this facility.
I also met someone who had the Rolls Royce of Mobility Scooters. It would cost her £11,500 but Motability used part of her PIP Mobility element (not the Care element) to buy a Chair or Scooter, it’s fully maintained and renewed every few years. All info is on the Motability website.
Charity shops occasionally sell used chairs, FB market place, e bay etc but they’d need to be serviced & well maintained. A brand new chair is best, if possible.
Some charities will fund essential medical equipment; The Salvation Army, a Regional Masonic Organisation, Red Cross, even Age Concern. Bouds has a grea idea for you to contact the M.S.Society for full or partial funding.
A surprise to me is that Social Services can provide wheelchairs, manual or electric. I understand a Social Worker visits you to assess your need.
Oh dear, I’m sorry I’ve written so much. I was hoping to help you but fear I’ve worn you out!!
Good Luck in your search Tingly, I wish you every success.
