House rules - clarification please?

Absolutely nothing. On the proper MS website there was an individual who was booted off 10-11 times, mainly for winding other members up and breaking rules. These were such happy times, and I don’t believe any other members were greatly inconveinienced,or upset for too long.

The good news is that I’ve spotted this person on here.Different name, but the same writing style,so maybe things will liven up, the Mods will swing into action, they will have to leave for 7-8 minutes ,re-join and try again.

There is another old name on here which was asked to leave, but the SUPERB protection offered on here means that they would have to use a Personal Message to be abusive,as there is no RTTR.That could be very upsetting for any member who got that unwanted attention.I think instances of abuse via PM were pretty rare as,name in lights, being the centre of attention, getting to a big ‘audience’ etc were all part of their intent.

.

Without the reply to the reply facility I would not have met people who I regard as good friends, travelled up and down the country blah blah blah

I feel very strongly that new members on this board are missing out.Any of The Old Guard disagree with me? If I was an MS Society member I would be really interested in how my subs are being spent on this place.

Sarcastic, inflammatory, totally unreasonable ,groundless and on a sunday…But this new board appears to be designed to make things easier for the managment at the expense of friendship, distraction, information and sometimes a [very filtered word] good laugh.

Remember that this is a place of freedom…We are free to do exactly what they tell us to

Bumping is what happens when someone replies to a post, it’s bumped to the top of the page where it’s more likely to attract attention. So if a post is falling off page 1,it can be bumped up.I hope that makes sense! Not had any sleep yet !

And I’m wondering who it is too, this sort of thing goes right over my head, but I do remember one or two banned members sneaking back on the old board, but I think they tripped up and were caught out.xxjo
Thaks for that…I had no idea. My goodness things are hotting up hey…I would probably never guess though in a month of Sundays…

I saw you in the pub earlier, I hope you enjoyed your coffee and tipple…I did it was lovely.

Thanks Liz - will send you a pm.

Completely agree wb. I really miss the RTTR function. It made the boards so much more interesting. It also kept the main thread “on topic” - the arguments and feisty stuff usually went off on the sides. Loads of fun too and some brilliant friendships. Bring it back please webteam???

Reply to the reply.

We used to be able to reply to an individual reply - it became a “branch” of the main thread. In fact, some threads were more like trees after a while, lol!

So, e.g. instead of me replying to you like this, on the main thread, I would click a button on your reply to only reply to you. It would then say “read replies” against your post, and if someone wanted to read it, they would follow the link.

Here’s a wee example: http://www2.mssociety.org.uk/applications/discussion/view.rm?post_id=1108905&id=14320

I miss it letdown

It’s true, the good stuff always happend on the replies to the replies ( I’m glad that RTTR was explained, I couldn’t get it either .)

And it was more intimate, you got to ’ know ’ people.I think that is what this site lacks, but it was obvious from the survey we did that the Society had already made their minds up to get rid of it.

And can someone please tell me via pm who they suspect? I need some drama and intrigue in my life…xxjo

Yes I did thanks,ready for another now!xxjo

youve got me worried now- i used to come on under a different name (my horse) but it dont use his name anymore as I had to sell him and it upsets me- so im now the dog

I dont think I ever upset anyone-just drifted away from the site

You can’t unless you had a app installed on a machine that could read and log either machine id or maybe even the mac address. Then you have all the different OS to contend with if you was going to make such a app or program,
and you could always login via a proxy unless the forum does not allow proxy connections.

You could do a bann based on email but then look how easy it is to get a new email.

So you can’t

It’s not you - please don’t worry! I’m talking about people who have been officially banned.

Sorry if I scared you!

Karen x

goodness really - people have been that horrible that they have been banned-!!.living up a lane in the middle of knowhere brings with it nievety and possible an inability to spell?!

Really agree, the RTTR made the old site the great place it was. Web team, please, please.

Do so agree, dont suppose theyll ever let us have it back, the RTTR I mean. I really miss the old site and the fun we had.

The thing that could probably identify you is a “cookie” placed on your PC when you connect to the Society.
There are two types - one is easy to get rid of (but will keep coming back) and the other seems only to attach itself if you use Firefox as a browser. The ordinary methods for cookie removal do not work on this type If anyone uses Firefox and is worried about cookies, feel free to PM me and I will tell you how I clear my PC every day (automatically).

Of course, if you signed up with a different type of computer (Say a Mac, or a Unix box) and a different e-mail address, you could be very hard to identify except by the writing style. I might be tempted to try this one day when I am really bored.

Geoff

A cookie will record user name with a password and though it may report back with IP, OS and browser used it won’t help with banning someone with a user name and ip address.

Very few people have static ips and any previous cookie will not link a past user name with a new user name with the server visited. To my knowledge a cookie (non active x ) can’t generate a identifier for machine id, hash or mac address or generate a id based on motherboard or bios. But a java applet can

Anyway its something along them lines to sick to keep up with the latest trends.

I’ve been banned from many rock chatrooms over the years (Nothing wrong with saying Slayer sucks) and have always been able to get back in, even used a Höbs instead of a Hobs, so the yanks could not type ö to bann me from the rock chatroom sadly those days of the wild west on the web have long gone.

Now adays I only visit 10 websites on main desktop and would never flush my cookies, keep typing logins with multiple passwords is a pain and I’m also not paranoid… well I am! as I do not do internet banking and never activated my current account for online mode

Just want to add my support to the ‘BRING BACK THE RTTR FUNCTION’ campaign.

It was so useful being able to start a conversation that wasn’t really relevant to the main thread. I don’t want to use ‘quote’ and put it on the main thread… and I don’t want to PM as it might be of interest to some other users. I had some of my best conversations through RTTR.
Sorry, I’m confused. How is this nasty? Are you saying that if someone is out of order, sendis threatening private messages, threatens mods for just doing their jobs, and generally breaks the rules and ignores multiple warnings, we should just let them?

There isn’t much we can do to stop people re-registering on the system. However, we’re lucky here because the community and the mods (especially the mods) are great at picking up on similar behaviour/writing styles etc. and flagging up suspicious accounts. In a lot of cases people are using the same email provider etc. which tends to add weight to the suspicion.

Where it is somone who’s been banned the individuals concerned - no matter how clever they think they are - can’t usually help themselves from getting up to their old tricks and generally slip up again sooner or later.

Thanks for the reply Greg.
