Holiday abroad for first time ideas please?

Good Afternoon Boys and Girls!

I hope you are all coping well with this cold, dark, dreach, weather?

Can I please ask those wheelchair users amongst us, where can you recommend for a holiday abroad? It will be the first one for my partner and I and we both want to make it the best for both of us, somewhere with a pool, near a beach and central to things like restaurants, bars etc.

Has anyone got any recommendations, they would be greatly received?

Thank you

Oooh Polly, how lovely. When you thinking of going?

We go to Gran Canaria every time now. Fell in love with the smaller town of Puerto Mogan years ago. Built around a smaii-ish beach, harbour and marina and all on the flat. Wall to wall restaurants and cafes. Friendly people and a local feel to the place. Very, very pretty. Never imagined I’d ever get MS and now use wheels, but this place fits the bill for all this. We book Airport Assistance the whole way through and pre book a taxi other end. Never a problem and the assistance people are all trained and know what they are doing. Easy.

Have a check on Tripadvisor Forums. Lots of info there. We’re back there again in February for the umpteenth time!

That sounds amazing! We are going for a short 1 week just ourselves in April, and then we are going for a family holiday in the summer. Since I haven’t been abroad since my diagnosis and I have worsened since then, it’s about getting it right for us all, and making sure there is enough for everyone and importantly, it is relaxing, that way we will all enjoy each holiday. I am soooooooooo looking forward to everything the future will bring now, I’m not scared anymore.

i will look that up, who do you travel with just out of interest?

Thank you Polly

I love to travel and am a sun worshipper, hubby has no interest in foreign travel and can’t handle the sun, being a red head. He was always happy to let me off on my solo travels for a few weeks. I’d never been abroad until I was 49! Then I got the bug and have travelled around half of Europe, Cyprus, Gran Canaria, Lanarote, Tenerife, Turkey (my favourite) Crete/Santorini and Canada. That was in six years! All on a shoestring mind!

The nearest airport to me I don’t have a choice of carrier and can only fly Ryanair. I book the whole trip independantly, flights, transfers, accommodation. Of course I don’t travel solo anymore, hubby would be so worried now. We were back there three times this twelve months. Only a week at a time. As soon as I’ve booked our flights for holiday A, I’m already looking ot for prices of the next one!

playa blanca Lanzarote is great for w/c users , you can go from one end of the resort to the other on a large walkway, when we first started going it was a small fishing village, its still one of my favourite places to go,along with cala n bosch in Menorca, last time i went there i was still able to walk, and we had a walk round the marina every might, the people there are some of the nicest i have ever met on holiday.

Hi, what about a cruise?

I discovered these last year and they cater so well for us wheelies!

There`s a coach firm who take me in my chair and the assistance at the port is wonderful.

I hire equipment which is placed in my accessible cabin and it is collected from there.

I`m hoping to go to Jersey next year and there is a full adapted hotel there!

If you want anymore info on these, please ask.

Thank you so so much!I will look into that too! I also need to make sure there’s enough for my 15 year old daughter, without breaking the bank. Thank you all so much xxx

I’m only going to Devon next time but looks lovely, going with my folks and my sister and her partner - we all went on a short break to Alton this year and took all the dogs - it worked out really well, so family all got together and sorted it out

A cruise does sound good Poll. I’m quite nervy about anywhere hot as I know how bad I get in heat now so assumed I’d be better off in the UK but I bet a breeze an always be found at sea.

I book through The Disabled Cruise Club. They are very knowledgeable and helpful.
