Help!!!! Advice needed for overbearing family!!

Hi All,

So, I’m still waiting for my appointment with neuro come through, but today I got my blood results back and I am negative for lyme’s! I have phoned my Dad to tell him the ‘good’ news and now he is insisting that I go private for my consultations and tests which he will pay for. The problem is if this is ms then seeing someone sooner or throwing money at it wont help at all!! But how do I explain that to him on the phone? (We live about 400 miles apart!)

Maybe its just that I will get to live in denial longer if I have to wait?! Although my gp seems quite convinced that I will be dx with ms (I live in the ms capital of the world!)

Any advice on how to deal with family and friends is very welcome!!!

Trouble is, your dad might be right.

It is by no means unusual for people to go private for at least a first consultation, either because htey have private health cover with work or because they don’t like the look of the waiting list and put their hands in their pockets. The way to do it is to pick an NHS MS specialist at a hospital near you who sees patients privately as well. The ‘near me’ tab at the top of the page on this site is a good place to start, but your GP will probably know the local scene well. Then if there is follow up to be done you will have a choice of transferring to the neurologist’s NHS list at some point.

So, if it looks as though your first consultation is going to be months and months away, you might want to think about letting your dad help. He would probably be awfully pleased if there was something practical that he could do, and it would give him something to focus his mind on rather than just worrying without being able to do anything. You know what fathers are like.

But of course the main thing is what you want and feel comfortable with.

Good luck.

Thanks Alison,

My gp has phoned this teatime and said that she has managed to get confirmation thst my neuro referral letter was recieved by the neurologist’s PA on Monday and it was labelled urgent so she thinks I should be seen in the next 2 weeks!!

My gp has assured me that the neuro is a really nice guy and is always willing to listen so I’m hoping the first consultation goes well!! I am going to keep my Dads offer in mind incase I don’t feel like I’m comfortable or happy though.

My Dad as all dads wants to fix things, it just all makes things feel a bit more real and that is really scaring me!!!
