Gyms

Been on a diet nearly hit my target. Now want to consider joining a gym but would it be worth checking they have a trainer that can set me a program I can cope with and that they understand MS before I join

hi phil

you should ask to speak to a trainer on your first visit (before the direct debit is set up).

i took my copy of relapsing remitting ms with me to explain what ms is.

the trainer said he had heard of it but didn’t know anyone with it.

he was keen to learn though and asked about any websites with more info.

if they have classes, pilates is wonderful for ms as is anything that strengthens the core.

have you asked your doctor about it?

there is a scheme whereby a GP can refer a patient to the gym.

well done on the diet.

don’t overdo it once you join because the flipping fatigue will get you!

I have been referred to the local gym by my GP. I was taking part in pilates classes to start with but now i’m getting back into the gym as that’s what I prefer. The trainer at the gym is aware of my MS and will be taking it into account before she sorts out a programme for me. The first 12 weeks in the gym will be ā€˜supervised’…after that I can go it alone, but they will always be there should I require any assistance.

One of the girls that work in gym, checked out MS and gave me a programme with some ā€œcoreā€ exercises - I don’t break any records but enjoy it…

Hi Phil,

I was referred by my MS nurse to neurological physios. Went to a weekly session at the hospital gym then was transferred to the local council run gym. Joined a neurological weekly session special rate of £2 - people that had had strokes etc. Person in charge took time with the new people to put a programme in place. Felt like wearing an MS t shirt as people assumed I had had a stroke.

Really enjoyed it and was very sociable too.

Only stopped as my work hours changed.

Good luck.

Jen

Thanks all really helpfull advise I’ll keep you posted
