good films

a while ago i wrote about films i wanted to see.

the martian was on virgin media films.

the danish girl also on virgin media.

the lady in the van is on tonight at 9.00 BBC2.

if you like alan bennett you’ll love this.

so i need a new wish list now.

Don’t know if it is your type of film but Spotlight is excellent, the story of the Boston globe uncovering sexual abuse scandal, also Brooklyn, nice gentle film, no bombs, guns or violence (in either of them) should you want to see a good gritty film Beasts of No nation is a great film, but brutal, story about boy soldiers in an unspecified African country.

Just watched the lady in the van. excellent!

Tears.

Happy now, just watched West side Story and enjoyed the nostalgia of Jason and the Argonauts the other day, reminds me of my dad who was a great admirer of Ray Harryhausen…always a good quiz auestion and answer for that matter!as is ten,the number of Oscars West side story won…like a good quiz…and a good film, going to see if I can find gangs of New York on Netflix or Amazon, well anywhere really! but highly recommend Spotlight, as I said, depressing subject matter but fantastic film and outcome for the Boston Globe!

Maggie Smith is an incredible actress. I’ve watched the Lady In The Van three times for the sheer pleasure of watching her genius in action:-)

Maude…,… a friend in America told me of that film The Gangs of New York

It’s great drama even though as you say, it does have a gloomy atmosphere, I think too it’s because there is a lot of truth in it regarding early New York and the influx of immegrants, I’m glad I recorded it when it was on TV here a number of years ago because iv never seen it on again since.

Some of my favourite Golden Oldies not often shown. Memorable, profound movies.

Bridges of Maddison County—Clint Eastwood and Meryle Streep

Sophies Choice—Meryle Streep and Kevin Kline

Butterflies are Free—Goldie Hawn

Being There–Peter Sellers and Shirley MacLaine

Ordinary People—Donald Sutherland and Mary Tyler Moore

The Notebook—James Garner

The Bucket List—Jack Nicholsen and Morgan Freeman

You’ve really started me off now Carole!

Although I love the whole film, that last scene especially , in the The Railway Children (1970) Jenny Aguter turning and seeing her father…teary eyed thinking about it,

better not get into favourite scenes now…we’ll be here for years lol.

Thanks, I have seen it but we have been watching good films again, as you can get so much on Netflix, however it is on one of channel 4’s channels(is that what you say,or is it platform?) on Wednesday. Anything with Daniel Day Lewis is usually exceptional! Got a bigger screen now too, the locations, peops and costume are fantastic. So a date for your diary, Wednesday! (and mine,it is already on the planner)…speaking of DDL,may have to look for, My left foot and Last of the Mohicans! I like how he just does the films that he wants to and cleared off to Italy to make shoes…could be a story for a film! lol

Oh one I forgot to add, you don’t see it on much at all,

‘Message in a bottle’

I know Kevin Kostner was in it but can’t remember who the actress was

Ossage County.oldies, Woman in a dressing gown(I know what’s ging to happen, but it still makes me cry(with frustration for her),The Apartment and Glengarry Glenross.

Just logged in quickly to say thanks for the film recommendation; “Beasts of No Nation” is excellent - gritty and violent - watched it last night in preference to the rubbish that was on. Anything with 'heartwarming" or “family” in the description and needs a sick bag attached gets the off button from us!

It is a great film, Abraham Attah deserved an Oscar as did Idris Elba, that would have saved all that controversy at the Oscars, but then again Spotlight was a worthy winner.

The best film I saw at the cinema this year was Room. It was an astonishing film - beautiful, heartbreaking, funny, bittersweet. It was an absolute emotional rollercoaster. Brie Larson was well worth her Oscar.

A couple older films that are among my absolute favourites are Lars & the Real Girl (from the description you may think it’s a typical American Beauty-style comedy, but it’s nothing like that. It has funny moments, but is ultimately very moving), and Dean Spanley. It’s especially good for anyone who has ever owned a dog (I haven’t though, and I love it).

room was a fantastic book but i haven’t seen the film.

most books don’t translate well into film.

The seventh seal Nosferatu Le femme Nakita Young guns Tattoo Shawshank… Can’t wait to see Neither wolf nor dog…awesome book!

No, it’s rare that a film ever stands up to the book. I hadn’t read Room though, so didn’t have any preconceived ideas of what it should be like. It was nominated for the best film at the Oscars though, so hopefully you’d still like it.
