General anaesthetic

Hi Not posted for over a year but can anyone share their experience. I am having general anaesthetic next week to sort out my skin cancer. I am told this will make my MS symptoms worse. Having a relapse anyway so it might not go well. Got any thoughts. Thanks BJ

Hi BJ

Firstly - good luck with your op, I hope it goes well.

My husband and I both have MS and have both had multiple generals since we were diagnosed. I have never been told, or heard my husband be told, that it would of made our MS symptons worse…and I suppose more importantly - neither of us felt it had made our symptons worse. Generally you are a bit weak and wobbly for a while after a general anyway…

Maybe they said that as you are in a relapse? Or maybe the surgeons we have dealt with arent great with MS! wHO KNOW.

Good Luck again

I have never had a problem with a G.A I had my last one a month ago and can honestly say no side effects at all. It was only a 20 min job mind, but even so I would say it “should” be fine. Even when I had major surgery a few years back totally fine. I even got them to discarge me a day early as I felt good. Don’t stress about it (easier said than done I know) and it will be grand.

Sending tons of positive vibes your way! Julie x

never been told that either, usually it is the surgery that might cause things to get worse if they do at all

Hello BJ I wouldn’t have thought it would make much difference. you’ll be seen by the aneasthetist prior to your surgery, so will be able to discuss Your concerns. Depending how long your surgery will be, also determines the level of aneasthetic you’ll be given. Good luck with op  xx

lts 5weeks since l had a total knee replacement op. l was advised to have a spinal block - by the anethetist. She thought it would be better for recovery rate. lt is a long operation - and yes l was awake throughout listening to all the banging/drilling/sawing - it was like being on a building site. But l felt relaxed and OK with it all. The staff kept talking and joking with me.And within a few hours l was able to sit up and bend my knee.

They will discuss what you feel happiest with - and give you a choice.

Best of luck

I had an op under general anaesthetic in January, and it had no effect on my MS whatsoever, You should be fine. Good luck with your op xxx

I had a general anaesthetic in January for day surgery. The anaesthetist did say that it wouldn’t affect my MS directly but if I was stressed then it could make my symptoms worse in the same way as a cold or infection could cause a flare up of symptoms. I didn’t notice any difference and in fact I found GA to be a lot better and easier to recover from than it was many years ago when I last had an op under GA. Good luck with your op, I hope it goes well.

hi

when ga was being discussed for me the being knocked out was not an issue but the recovery and unknown of how it would affect me was the concern-i am ‘fairly’ disabled now. the ga didnt go ahead but was something that the drs/consultants were aware of. like others have said i dont understand how they think the ga alone will/could make u worse.

good luck with the op!

Great replys. Thanks to all of you. No stress now. Looking forward to a short sleep now. Cheers. BJ

I cant have local anasetic with adrenalin as it makes my M.S much worse, they do two types of local with and with out adrenalin, has only ever applied to me at the dentist and having stitches, but if there was any chance I was to have any local whilst under general id request without, good luck. hope all goes well

I have had numerous general anaesthetics since diagnosed and never had a problem. Even when I had to stay in bed for prolonged periods everything came back the same so I wouldn’t let it worry you coz that is more likely to affect the MS.

All done, all good. Cancer all gone. No extra effects from the general although I was given an extra dose of steroids during the op as I was just finishing a course anyway. Spend two days doing nothingwhich is great. Cheers BJ

Great stuff BJ
