Feeling drunk, light headed, dizzy. Is this a thing? and why it worse at work?

Hi, My name is Alison. I haven’t used the forum much since my diagnosis. I have been well-ish on my meds.

I need some advice and didn’t know who to ask so I immediately thought of the forum.

My most annoying flare up symptoms are unsteadyness, dizzy, feeling drunk, floaty. This is generally associated with

some kind of numbness mainly legs. Most the of the time it will be when I am tired and last hours, a day and then go. So not a

proper relapse as such just when I am ill or knackered.

However I notice these episodes are increasing in frequency and I get them most days I work.

I am a nurse on a busy ward so do short 6 hours shifts and find I am doing okay but can pretty much gaurantee I will have a weird spell at work. I hate feeling like I am being a pain to my colleagues but I do tell them if I am wobbly as I don’t feel certain tasks are safe when I feel like that.

Can anyone give advice? Do you feel like this?

Thanks

Hi, one of my main symptoms… painful legs gets worse when i’m tired. It may be physical fatigue perhaps. I don’t have any advice other than meditation seems to help me.

hi alison

have you told your ms nurse what you told us?

she/he may be able to offer help or advice.

whatever weird symptom i mentioned to my ms nurse, she always seemed to understand what i meant.

also as a nurse he/she will understand your concerns about work.

you should be able to take regular breaks as part of the reasonable adjustments, even if it’s just to get away fro your ward for a few minutes.

I agree with Carole - mention these symptoms to your m.s. nurse.

Be careful about telling colleagues that you don’t feel safe doing certain tasks - someone may well question whether or not you are up to the job.

I do see my consultant soon so will mention it. Thanks. Sadly its not the kind of environment for breaks. It is just a 6 hour mad crazy shift but then i get to go home so its fine. I just hate being on a shift and then feeling so pants.

This is how I feel every day and the main reason I had to tell work - I teach and the last thing I needed was for a parent to complain about the drunk teacher. I mentioned it to both my ms nurse and my consultant and they sent me to a balance clinic. Not sure they’ve been of any benefit yet - but you never know got follow up appointment after Easter let’s see what they suggest next.

Like you I have noticed it’s much worse when I’m tired. Because of this I’m having to find a new teaching job nearer home so I don’t have to do so much traveling and hopefully reduce the tiredness. I’m grateful for the school holidays - gives me time to recover from term.

I’ve began to learn to live with it and when I need to adapt what I do to overcome the issues.

Hi Alison,

Thought I’d posted something yesterday … invisible mesesages again.

I suggested your symptom maybe vertigo. I sometimes get similar symptoms, light headed, dizzy

Hope you’re feeling better this week.

Hi Alison,

You ask why your symptoms are worse at work.

It’s probably because a lot of our symptoms get worse when we are under stress. Even when your colleagues are understanding and supportive it’s still stressful work.

It`s worse at work because of the added pressure to complete tasks. I chose not to work as my symptoms got gradually worse. Finance became an added pressure not working but not as much as working.

Based on what you have said it is very similar to what I went through. I was originally diagnosed RRMS but has recently changed to PPMS.

I must admit I`d rather be back at work than going through this sh.
