Eye symptoms

Hi, I’m awaiting lp, after Mri showed brains lesion, now seen optician today as I’ve had terrible double vision, and also pale blurry vision in one eye. I’ve been referred for urgent eye apt from today’s optician apt on Monday to check for optic neuritis, feeling a bit over whelmed, as this has taken 10 years for Drs to see proof of my symptoms. Any one tell me what to expect from the eye clinic? Thanks x

Hi Dusty,

I haven’t been diagnosed but having investigations. I have double vision and problems with my eyes generally. I’ve been under opthalmology and can share the types of things they’ve done with me if that’s any help. Appointments can include sight checks, field vision checks, eye scan, and during the consultation they may check pressures and look into the back of the eye. They can use different stains too. They can sometimes dilate your pupil for some of the checks and if your letter mentions this its worth having someone with you as it temporarily makes your vision strange and you misjudge distances, for example of kerbs. The doctor will also want to know all about your eye problems, and of course do mention the MRI scan results too. Sometimes you can be in the clinic for a couple of hours, or at least that has been my experience.

I’m under the optometrist now trying prisims to help with my double vision/poor eye coordination. I really hate my eyes, they cause me so many problems.

Hopefully you’re being referred to a neurologist as well? There are all sorts of conditions that can cause symptoms and hopefully they can start looking into things for you.

All the best.

Hi butterfly_cake

im already under a neuro, she ordered the scan and lp. I already have prisms which are no longer working, as I’ve had mild double vision for a while, but it’s got so bad it’s not working anymore, I thought it was because I just had a lazy eye! But it’s got so bad. Optician said I need to see eye clinic for that, but my other eye has been acting up with poor central vision, it’s blurry and when I read text instead of it being all black some words are grey. It’s the only way I can describe it. I’ve got emergency apt on Monday so see what happens.

Thank you for your comments, my hubby is coming with my as driving is a challenge anyway! I’m sorry you are suffering too, double vision sucks! I can’t watch tv, driving is a nightmare so avoid it if possible. It’s such a frustration, optician did say they can use special prisms they stick on your glasses from the hospital. So hope they can as optician couldn’t get the eyes to line up with normal prisms.

thanks for your comments x

Hi Dusty.

Typically, some high street “opticians” will not prescribe Prism lenses beyond a certain strength.
They get you referred to a hospital Orthoptics Department who work out how strong the prism should be, and in which direction, and are then likely to use a stick-on Fresnel lens as a check.
After you have worn this for a couple of months or so, then they re-check and issue a letter that the optician can act on when supplying glasses.

Having had a very unpleasant experience with one of the high street chain opticians last year, I went to a small local chain who prescribed something that the big chain said could not be done. The ar true opticians (making up their own glasses) and I have been happy for six months.

What I now notice is that I feel unstable until I have put my glasses on in the morning. I assume that the brain is fighting to reconcile two different images (a process similar to what vision scientists call “fusion”) and not doing this successfully.

Hi Geoff

thanks for your reply, been to eye clinic today, and I’ve found out I have a macular hole in one eye(the one with double vision) and macular scaring in the other. Which has continued to spread in the last 5 years, approx 30% bigger. Eye dr has referred me to retina specialist.

So it’s not optic neuritis but thinning to the retina, which I have not heard of before,

I’m also being referred to an opthomologist for the double vision.

Geoff, I also have issues with balance and depth perception with and without my glasses too, making it interesting walking on uneven surfaces!
