Electric shock stabbing pain in head - advice please !

Hi,

Anyone get electric shock pain in the head ? how do you deal with it ? It is driving me crazy.

I was on Tysabri for 2 years and stopped in August 2016 … no new problems until a couple of weeks ago … suddenly started to get severe electric shock type pain always on right side of head towards the back rather than on top. It is driving me crazy … comes every 5 to 10 seconds and wakes me up during the night. Can’t bear to touch my hair or head and the shocks are so intense they make me physically wince with the pain.

My consultant had suggested Gabapentin for the Hug and leg pains I already have when I saw him in November … so I have been on Gabapentin for a week at 3 x 100mg tablets a day. How long should I wait to see if they have any effect ? …the only thing that gives me any relief is co codamol (at the highest strength) and I’m taking these every 4 hrs but the pain comes back after about 2 to 3 hrs and is just as severe each time.

I don’t know what to do with myself when the pain starts … anyone got any thoughts or ideas or experience of similar thing ?

thank you

hi

when i was first diagnosed i kept having what i described to my neuro as the feeling of a meat cleaver hitting my head in the centre.

i can’t remember what my neuro said but it calmed down and eventually stopped.

i am concerned that you are taking such a high dose of such a strong painkiller.

speak to your gp and/or ms nurse.

by the way co-codamol causes constipation, hope you are alright in this area.

Hi oneshot

I put something on last week about a weird problem I had for two full days. Mine wasn’t painful.

if you look on page two at the bottom, brain zaps, it may or may not ring a few bells.

Hope you feel better soon

Thanks for comments,

Went to doctors today,

he thinks pains are as a result from swollen glad in neck which he thinks indicates the muscle in neck is possibly trapping a nerve and that is why the pains are so intense and always in the same place… I am not convinced but will go with his views for now. He has prescribed diazepan in high dose for a week as he thinks that this will act as a strong muscle relaxant and as such this will relax the muscle in my neck and in turn release the trapped nerve … well … Ive had 6 tablets so far and no change. I am to take 3 tablets 4 times a day and he has warned me that it will knock me out big time for a few days (to be honest I hope it does as this pain is unbearable) I’m also taking the co codamol for now until the diazepan kicks in as this is the only thing that gives me some relief (all be it for only a few hours before the pain comes back) Oh he also said to start taking Naproxen too again as an anti flamitory. If none of this helps he said Morphene for the pain is the only other option but is a last resort.

It is hard to accept that this pain has come on so quickly and is so intense and has only been with me for a week or so and whilst I am not suicidal I can understand how people can suddenly be so desperate as to do anything to just stop the pain.

I will let you know what happens and I hope i will be able to report that he was right and pass on my experience to anyone else who has a similar experience.

ps. yes co codamol can make you constipated but for me it is not a big problem, just drink more and the occasional spoonful of lactulose or senna does the trick !! (what a lovely subject !)

Oh no! sorry you’re suffering from this. I had sharp head pains when I was first diagnosed, but when they came I had a spasm and my speech and fine motor skills were affected. They were so frequent and painful, I was admitted to hospital and given iv steroids and also prescribed gabapentin. Hopefully the meds will kick in soon but if not, try calling your ms nurse.

Hope you get some relief soon.

Take care,
