Does anyone here suffer from bruxism? Something worth considering...

What if teeth clenching is more than what it appears to be?

“In 2010, Williams et al. published a breakthrough real-time study demonstrating marked lateral displacement of the temporal bones in MS patients during bruxism (Ref). Using a pulse phase locked loop (PPLL) device, MS patients were found to have a bilateral temporal bone displacement six times greater than healthy controls during a sustained clenching force of 100 pounds of pressure. It was hypothesized that reduced bone density in MS patients can increase the displacement along the cranial sutures, possibly allowing skull bone deflection to create damaging pressure waves.”

You can read more about it here:

Interesting. I have to wear a mouth guard every night due to clenching and grinding :frowning:

Yes with displacement

Vitamin D is a potent immunomodulator but it’s also essential for proper bone health. What if the Vitamin D connection to MS is related to cranial suture (bone) health and not the immune system? There are several studies out on the poor bone health of MS patients both at onset of MS and after many years of MS.

Bruxism is horrid. It can cause so many awful pains that you just dont onto if MS . I’m only just learning the extent of the damage I’ve done to my face , jaw , neck , ears even…and it could have been avoided if I had worn the gum shields.

But on a lighter note treatment offered for bruxism can include muscle relaxants. Are any of you getting tips how to relax your jaw ? I’m finding it hard, as I’m bedridden 24 / 7 in a lying down position all the time…and I know my poor posture isnt helping my jaw position at all.

Absolutely gob smacked that the force from ms sufferes can be as much as 100 pound weight of pressure, when clenching teeth . Very good link, thank you for sharing. Doesnt help when bone density changes with steroids some of us take as well…osteoporosis is no joke.
