Diet v's MS

Hi all, I’m new to this so apologies if this has come up recently.

I’m wondering what people’s opinions are of taking up a

special diet to help improve your symptoms. Do you not take

any dairy products for example and do you feel it really benefits you?

thanks

Hi

I have cut down on dairy but not stopped it completely. I eat more meat now as it seems to make me feel a little better but I have really cut down on pasta and rice. I feel a little better for it and less bloated. The biggest thing though is exercise. My legs are not great but I really find swimming a great help. I swim 3-4 times a week and am stronger for it.

I adhere to the Swank diet.

It is ultimately a diet of good, solid, common sense and so is useful in any event. Given that such things are more of a long term investment, rather than a quick fix, cure all, i will not speculate as to whether it has been a positive influence upon my overall health or the development of my MS.

What i do know is that outside of missing stinky and expensive cheese… it is a diet that holds no downside. I can still have a bit of chocolate daily and booze is not restricted at all!

I would recommend it. The website dedicated to it has a wealth of advice and guidelines to follow, all at not cost.

Hi, I follow the BestBet diet no dairy,no gluten, sugar, soya or pulses, it is hard to stick but if I go back to eating normally my symptoms are much worse.

Hi I am gluten free and dairy free. I don’t buy much of the gluten free ranges in supermarkets. I feel much better when I don’t eat refined sugar. Have made some nice rock buns recently made with ground almonds (as flour substitute) with no added sugar just lots of dried fruit to sweeten them, yummy.

Too much salt can make MS symptoms worse apparently though we need a little salt in our bodies but there is salt in bread for example.

Hi everyone

I recently started on Tysabri (three months ago) and have decided I really need to start exercising and eating healthier food. I intend following Slimming World as this has worked successfully for me in the past but to kick start things I’m thinking of doing the clean 9 dettox as I work with a few people who have had really good results doing this - has anyone heard of it before? Has anyone followed it?

I was on the 5:2 diet and I really need to get back to it. The diet isn’t too tricky as you only have 2 days a week of limiting your calories. I’ve managed to do it even with taking Tecfidera which demands a food-padded stomach

I wouldn’t say the weight’s dropped off but it did stabilise my weight and lost a few pounds. I want to go back to it and see if I can drop a few more pounds that way I might be able to keep a few items of clothing that were a little snug recently.

I was vegetarian when diagnosed and decided to go back to eating meat to see if a change in diet would improve my general well being - it didn’t.

So I am back to being vegetarian and definitely feel at my best when I am cutting down dairy as much as possible (but I do love cheese!).

My nurse always says there’s no direct proof that diet can help/hinder MS symptoms - but I do believe for me, that being vegetarian is the best diet.

Definitely. Avoid sugar, dairy and gluten. I think that anything in moderation is OK. Lots of fruit, vegetables and generally a healthy diet. Get an allergy test. Avoid anything that unsettles your immune system. I’ve had relapses from eating the wrong foods when I’ve had a cold.

Good luck with it.

I am compelled to say, i think they are wrong. very wrong.

but in any event, your pursuit of a vegetarian diet is not going to exacerbate things; and so good for you!
