Depression - prozac

Hiya folks - trust we are all well or at least hanging in there… I was in cipralex for a while and decided to have a break around May time and did ok until the last few weeks when I have slowly slid down to rock bottom again - complete lack of interest in everything and emotionally shattered, no energy, no sex drive, no nothing really…I was trying and have lost a bit of weight because I had orginally thought/felt that anti-depressants were a reason for weight gain… Anyway, went to my GP yesterday and he perscribed Prozac for me as a change as he said that I would be on my way to clinical depression, i have started it, 20mg, reluctantly but I can’t go on feeling rubbish and would love to hear any positive thoughts on it… The internet gives us very conflicting reviews of Prozac, from a life saver to putting on weight and total loss of sex drive, highly confusing…

i don’t know much about it but it sounds as though you need something to stop the downward spiral.

good luck and be well

Prozac is an SSRI.

The worst SSRI is Seroxat. Any of my friends who have been started on Seroxat have regretted it (think - they traded depression for anxiety). Prozac is probably not as bad (but you may well consider suicide when you start it).

You can look up Prozac on

and decide if you want to kep taking it.

Geoff.

Hi Geoff. I must be the exception as Seroxat was a life saver for me. I was originally prescribed prozac and after three weeks I felt no better, my appetite completely disappeared and I had lost half a stone. That was when I got Seroxat. My last bout of depression I was prescribed Citalopram and it worked a treat. I weaned myself off it after six months but I would have no hesitation taking it again if needed.

HI

I took Prozac for around 12 months. It was a life saver for me. It really did ge me back on track. Sadly I stopped taking it thinking I was ok but then had problems with my MS, so that was put on the back burner until I sorted out all of my other problems but should not have done this.

I wont lie and say I did not have side effects, I think my worst was vivid dreams, I did also put on some weight but cannot say this was purely down to the drug. I was actually feeling so well, I had no anxiety and depression so was eating quite a lot!

I have another friend who has been it for years and she if fine.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Peeps - maybe I’m having a placebo effect but I’m only 3 days into my treatment and my mood has lifted slightly so fingers crossed…
