Hello I just been reading the ‘new research into MS’ and it discusses MS and the contraception pill. i’ve read there are two sides to this. One being those on the pill can may hold off developing MS. The other argument is that it may increase the risk.
I was on the contraceptive pill for around 5 years Oct 2007 to Feb 2012, then came off it completely. I became unwell and was diagnosed ‘possible MS’ in March 2013.
Helebon, I do not think that even Messrs Bush, Rumsfeld and Blair would accept that as evidence of a smoking gun, and they are not known for being hard to convince!
Correlation does not imply causation (says she, who remains firmly convinced that her MS was triggered by shingles…)
So, who knows? No one, not yet. Maybe all will be revealed in our lifetime and maybe it won’t. In the meantime, I am sure that many of us have our pet theories on what got things going in our case. Time will tell. Maybe.
I agree with you I am convinced my MS was triggered by something else so I can completely understand you think yours may be triggered by shingles, thats the herpes varicella zoster virus. It’s good they are doing research and I noticed they are researching into if systemic infections leads to MS progression. I think it on the research tab of this site. I have a feeling there is a link with infections and MS but thats my view.
With hindsight, my immune system has been iffy for some years but I’ve never had shingles or glandular fever. I was on the pill for not quite 10 years but I’ve been off it for longer than I was on it.
Whatever triggered my MS is not obvious and none of the theories I’ve seen so far fit my history.
I don’t fit into any of the ‘might cause ms’ categories and still I’ve got MS. I was an end of summer baby so my mum had plently of vitamin d before I was born. I had mumps and chicken pox (as did my sister who hasn’t got ms) when I was a child but other than that have never had any of the other virus/illness type things that ‘may’ cause ms. I don’t have a family history of MS. I used the contreceptive pill for about 3 months, it didn’t suit so I changed to something else. I don’t tend to get stressed in life or when I worked in fact my mum says I’m far to laid back and always have been!
So as you can see I dont really fit into the ‘likely to get MS’ list…However, I have got MS!!! I’m not going to waste my life away wondering how and why it has happend to me…it just has and I do my very best to get on with it and enjoy the things I can do with the people I want to enjoy them with.
For me asking ‘why me?’ is a waste of time and effort when I could be enjoying life!
