Hoping someone out there can help me!
Been experiencing a range of neuro symptoms - headaches, feling spaced out, sore legs, pins and needles, tingling and numbness in all areas of body - arms, leg and back especially.
Clear Physical exam apart from slight wobbling on Romberg test.
Was told by neuro that MRI was fine, not MS and discharged being told that it was neuro muscular due to a virus/anxiety.
Been to see my GP this evening about something else and he had a look at my MRI report which said I had 1 irregular shaped lesion and my result was inconclusive. He said if Neuro thought it was anything untoward, they would have done further testing.
I’m worried sick now - Can anyone help on this?
Suzanne.
If it was anything scary, they definitely would have done more tests.
The fact that the lesion was irregular shaped reduces the chances of it being to do with MS - most MS lesions have nice defined outlines and are ovoid or u-shaped.
I think you deserve a better explanation of why you developed these symptoms though, and if it could also have caused the lesion or if the lesion is just a coincidence (scans can sometimes show lesions in perfectly healthy people). “Neuro muscular because of a virus/anxiety” is a really naff explanation!
If your symptoms are continuing / worsening, then you should ask for a new referral. The difficult bit is knowing which department because, although you describe your symptoms as neurological, they can actually be caused by non-neurological conditions too (e.g. that a rheumatologist would deal with) Hopefully your GP will know where the best place to start again is.

I know what you mean about the explanation Karen, it was very vague and I felt like they felt that I was just wasting their time.
I was very upset about what the GP told me last night - he also said that he didn’t understand what it meant (helpful!), but in the cold light of day I’m thinking although the MRI was inconclusive, if they had found any trace of MS or demyelination that would have showed on the Radiology report. I’m just a bit annoyed because the Neuro said my MRI was fine and that there was nothing of concern and then my GP tells me I have a lesion. My GP hasn’t had a letter as yet to explain the results from the Neuro so I guess I just have to wait for that and see where to go next.
I think because my symptoms are so global and now the lesion that they have found is ‘abnormally’ shaped, maybe points to something other than MS but the not knowing and the symptoms are hard work when you’ve had to deal with them for 8 months with no period of remission :0(
There’s a big difference between “irregular” and “abnormal”. Irregular shape means just that: the lesion is not a regular shape. This doesn’t mean anything in particular (ie it’s not shorthand for anything scary) and isn’t anything to worry about. There are lots of things that can cause lesions including migraine and vitamin deficiencies. In fact, your lesion may be completely unrelated to your symptoms. It sounds like this is what your neuro has concluded anyway. An example: if someone has symptoms in their legs and their MRI shows a non-specific lesion at the back of the brain, the neuro would probably dismiss the lesion because that part of the brain has nothing to do with the legs. It might be very different if there was more than one lesion and/or lesions in more than one area though. Hopefully the follow up letter will make things clearer. Kx
Sorry Karen, the report said irregular - not abnormal.
There was definitely only one lesion on the report and the fact that my neuro said that my scan results came back fine then I have to believe that everything is fine. I asked her on the day I got my results if there was anything on the MRI to be concerned about and she said no, so knowing I now have a lesion has sent me into panic mode. However, as you said it must not be anything that relates to my symptoms and if it required further testing then I’m sure that would have been the next step - not to discharge me.
I am being checked out for a B12 deficiency, this is at my request, as it was in the high 200’s in August and hasn’t been looked at since. I don’t want to tell doctors how to do their jobs but I feel that I have to do something as my GP is very apathetic.
I just feel like I’m the one doing all the work and the medical profession are not very concerned. I also know I’m not how I was this time last year - It may be anxiety based but I feel the symptoms brought on the anxiety not the other way round.
Ah, this whole thing is a minefield!!! I just wish someone could tell me what was wrong with me! :0(
