Concessions for those with long term illness or disability

Concessions for those with long term illness or disability

The Money Advice Service (run by the government I think) has some money advice tips for those with long term illness or disability, some I didn’t know.

Concessions at public libraries - including overdue books. Free admission for carers at National Trust and English Heritage properties.

Some we have mentioned on this forum before - cap on water bills, free cinema ticket for friends and carers. Discounted and free theatre ticket for carer. Free admission for carers at football matches.

Thanks Lenny,

Didn’t know about NT EH - just about to get a wheelchair so this will be useful.

If you visit some attractions in UK and Europe and you’re in a wheelchair the carer gets in for free as it’s their responsibility to get you out in the event of evacuation.

Just went on a distillery tour was pushed round, my carer got in for free - wheelchair was very useful especially after sampling the whisky/gin/vodka!

ln the past - l have been to the races - in a wheelchair - and to the Royal Show on a scooter - and each time l was allowed through without having to pay - AND the friend with me also did not need to pay. Made me popular with friends - as they could take me places and with my blue badge - park close to entrances so they could get me in easily.

l know at our local swimming pool - disabled people can swim l think for free - or at least a concessionary price.

lts worth finding out what concessions we are entitled to.

Thanks Lenney,

This could prove useful at some point.

Very interesting. This is not my personal opinion, so please don’t jump down my throat, but I am not sure that all of that is correct. I have been a volunteer for the National Trust, at Lanhydrock House, and they do not let carers have free admission, unless they are members. They do however, have wheelchairs available for people to use if they need them. They also have an off road tramper, for people to access the grounds. We also have a lift to the second floor and are as disabled friendly as we possibly can be. xxx

I found this on the main National Trust website:

Visitors with disabilities

Entry fees

Our admission policy admits the necessary companion, or carer, of a disabled visitor free of charge, on request, while the normal membership, or admission fee, applies to the disabled visitor.

To save having to ‘request’ a companion’s free entry, an ‘Access for all Admit One Card’ can be issued by our Supporter Service Centre. This card is made out in the name of the disabled person, not the companion, so there is not a restriction to taking the same person on each visit.

To request an Access for all Admit One Card, please either email our Supporter Service Centre or phone them on 01793 817634. They will need the name and full postal address of the disabled person.

I love Shakespeare, I went to the RSC at Strattford a year or so back and both mys husband and I got tickets for £16 each. See the quote below direct from their website.

‘Tickets for disabled people cost £16 in all our theatres - whenever you visit or wherever you choose to sit. If you require the services of a companion their ticket will also be £16.’

I have not been since as Shakespeare’s plays are very long and I came away doubled up in pain. However, if on a good day you fancy going still worth knowing. LouLou x

LouLou, l live near Stratford - in a little village- and every year the ‘locals’ put on a Shakespeare play on the village green - it is condensed version - 30mins. lt is on a sunday as close to his birthday as possible. This year it will be ‘As you like it’ - and it is free - just a collection for local hospice.
