asked a friend whose wife has m.s. how his wife was getting on. He said he wasn’t sure as she wont talk about it to him.

Of course she may be one of those people who prefer not to talk about their m.s. but he feels cut off from her.

Are there any ‘tactics’ he should use to get her to communicate or is it best to leave things as they are?

Hi, my hubby didnt like to talk about the possibilty of me having MS in the early days. I wanted to talk…he didnt…the reverse of your friend`s wife!

The MS Society offers free literature about a variety of MS topics. Maybe something there will help.
