Citalopram antidepressants - advice please

What time have you chosen to take it Ann? I take my in the evening because it makes me drowsy.

It effects some people with insomnia…if that turns out to be you, then obviously you’d take it on a morning, there’s no set time of day

Good luck xxx

I may be wrong in saying this but with everything that has happened it isn’t surprised that you are feeling so run down because of the emotional lability. What many Ms’ers don’t actually realise is that this can as a direct result of nerve damage from the MS and many people find that SSRi anti-depressant like Citalopram actually keep the serotonin levels high and that this can actually help keep you on an even keel.

I don’t have any personal experience with citalopram but I do know of MS’ers who have taken it for this and it has really helped them and if they forget to take it then they relapse and become very emotional. I hope that it helps you with the emotional lability and that it makes life a lot easier for you

I started on citaliplan years ago, I did switch to sertraline and am still on them I never wanted to take anti represents but with one thing and another they help and the two together is a start and just a low dose will help keep things in perspective

Like others have said, I found them really hard to adjust to - don’t be surprised! after a few months I decided they weren’t for me. BTW do a search on all the side effects as some of them surprosed me but disappeared when I stopped taking the drug

Best wishes

Thanks for the further responses. On day 3 now. Very dry mouth to begin with although this seems to be improving. It is causing insomnia - can’t get back to sleep in the early hours after my nightly trip to the toilet. I’ll keep persevering though as I can cope with the side effects do far. Thanks again everyone. Ann xx
Thanks for the information - interesting to read. Could certainly use some serotonin in my life!

Switch to taking on a morning if insomnia persists Ann
Thanks Blossom. I have always taken them am - I love my sleep and dread insomnia. It appears (touch wood, fingers crossed etc) that apart from a slight dodgy taste and dryness in my mouth, I’ve been lucky as the other side effects have gone. Do feel less tearful but it’s early days - maybe it’s the placebo effect? Thanks again. Ann xx

Placebo effect!!! Who cares lol…sounds Like it’s starting to kick in…happy days

I hAvent read all the responses you have had but in my experience i was so glad i took them. I was very apprehensive about taking them as my sister had started taking them a year before me and suffered from side effects so i anticipated the worst…however i started them with no problems and then did c.b.t sessions and i stopped taking them without any problems.

Just to update. Have been taking Citalopram for 18 days now. Early side effects have gone and I’m beginning to feel much more level. Not as tearful and definitely less short tempered with the children. I’m so pleased I’ve given them a chance. Have also started CBT which feels like it will be interesting and hopefully helpful. Just got a tricky week at work to get through and then hopefully everything will get easier. Thanks for all the advice on here. It is much appreciated - as always. Ann xx

Hi, just looking to see how you are getting on Ann. I have just been put on these (Monday) and getting the nausea, lack of appetite and last two days bad headaches. Also not sleeping well. I was on them when I had PND and never had any side effects so find it odd this time around I am having them? Also can people advise when is the best time to take them. I’m taking them at night around 10pm. I don’t feel mega bad and if these symptoms are likely to pass I will put up with them. Typical my re of side effects of headaches passed and now I start on this and get headaches like that again. They particularly start at night. Thanks in advance? Xxx

I take them after breakfast in the morning along with a myriad of othere drugs, I did have some mild side affects at first but not for long, good luck.

Hi Ann

It must be a Citalpram day today i just answered on another posting , im not a fan of them as for me personnally they did not hit the mark but PTSD maybe different to Depression as at 1st i was diagnosed as Depression then after lots of counsilling its been determined it is infact PTSD from my lifeboat days , the citalopram seemed to make me feel sick for a week or 2 then settled down but my dreams thoughtss and images were still recurring i still felt sad and down and upset alot of the time , but living in a fishing village theres always alot of triggers here everyday to remind me and because i was high up on the boat alot of people know me for that alone which makes forgetting impossible , i didnt ask to get them changed i just went down 1 day and i was told they needed to be changed and i was put on Mertazepine which are fantastic but counsilling is a key part they go hand in hand , the Mert or PTSD has made me emotionless and im guessing this is a small price to pay to finally sleep and cope , but the CBT or such like is an important part and i would start both straight away as the sooner you start the sooner hopefully you will fell better.

hope it settles soon for you respect sheep

I’m generally fnding Citalopram are fine although they have affected my appetite. Only really fancy junk food and am rarely actually hungry. Had some headaches and indigestion too. On here a while ago someone mentioned an anti depressant that also helps with fatigue. Does anyone know the name of this? If I ask to change then I would like one that might help with fatigue - worth a try at least. Thanks all. xx

Also, have had 5 counselling sessions. Feeling much more like myself. Just need a new job now…

Glad to hear that Claire, I’ve been on them since dx and I think they keep me level.

Take care, Wendy xx
