chair or scooter?

Hi,looking for opinions please. when its safe i’m thinking holidays but i cant walk far so will need with a chir or scooter to keep up and investigate places. I’m thinking electric wheelchair or a scooter but i dont know which would suit better so i’m looking for pros and cons of both.

I would need something to fold up to fit in a car and possibly all terrain- dont need it indoors so im thinking a scooter, but im unsure.

Any thoughts welcome, thanks

I actually got a wheelchair with a detachable front wheel drive. Bit like a comfortable motorbike. Best of both worlds

Thats a different concept - am i right in thinking a wheelchair is more for indoors? if thats the case im better off with a scooter but i want to “walk” with people so not go too fast and be able to go anywhere

There is an all terrain wheelchair Boma which is more capable than the better known Tramper scooter. But neither are very transportable.

You have to consider what you will gain for your money. I went for a rugged boot scooter. It can cope with rough parkland tracks, but not mountain. It is perfectly happy with pavements, town centres and supermarkets.

The market is crammed with offerings. Mine is a Supascooter, but Your best bet is to find a local retailer who can take you through the options.

I am OK to walk a few hundred yards, but it allows me to go out for a while day. Good luck and enjoy.

Hi, I went for the scooter, mines a go go elite traveller, goes for about 10/12 miles, can do park land, paths, not great on rough terrain, but it depends on what you wan to do. I bought my 1st 1 from a mobility shop and paid a fortune for it, the 2nd 1 I bought on line from Lloyds and paid a lot less, so whatever you get shop around and try and stick away from mobility shops and they seem to charge the most, good luck.

Yeah it’s a different concept but covers everything and is easily transportable. The drive attachment only weighs 8kg but can go 30km on one charge. And, the wheelchair is folding so doesn’t take up much room. I previously had a scooter but going on holiday, or even getting it into the car was a hassle. Now it takes a couple of minutes, and I can do it myself with no help from anyone. I have all terrain wheels and and can go on country trails etc.

Hi, I1ve had both and now can only use my electric wheelchair.

Pros of a scooter…you dont feel as ‘disabled’

leaving it outside a shop is a good idea, to walk inside

Pros of a wheelchair… you can get up to a restaurant table better

you can get on a bus more easily

Whichever you chose, have fun!

Hi, thanks for the replies.

Hopeful - what make is yours?

CRD - is yours easily transportable? I still drive so i want to be able to put it in the boot of a car, and how much room do they take up?

I had a quick look on line and like you all said, there are so many choices on the market its confusing. So many questions! I do need to go somewhere and have a look but at the moment im staying away from shops.

I coudnt see on any pictures any where to put crutches, do they all have space to put them? or what do you do?

Thankyou x

Goes in the back of a Jazz (old style). Seat comes off easily and is heavy on its own. My technique is to put a magic mat over the cill and lever it in and out. I am six foot and still reasonably mobile. My wife at 5 ft 3 can do it, but I usually do it. Battery on mine is lithium so fairly light. Main chassis can split in two to make individual parts lighter. I could have gone for a lighter model, but seat is not sprung and only one motor and less able to go off pavement.

I would suggest you try before buy, if you find the salesman doesn’t ask plenty of searching questions Walk Away. Some people suggest eBay or your favoured second hand site. You may need to buy a new battery

It is all about compromise. Several people I know have a scooter to use from home and another to take away with them.

As you are doing, understand your options and know what you want.

I’m a full time wheely and when my scooter needed replacing I got a Whill model C It’s like a cross between a scooter and a chair and cost about the same as a good quality scooter. I think it’s excellent. It breaks down into 3 component parts in seconds to go in the boot of a car, it turns on a sixpence and it climbs hills effortlessly. It’s a lithium battery. I can even move the chair remotely via my phone! Husbands party trick is to move it remotely with me in it with HIS phone!!!

I just need some decent weather to take it out now! Hope that helps

Hi, so I think people replying to this post, be careful of the lanuage they use…ie “the benefits of a scooter is feeling less disabled” I can tell that person that I use a scooter and don’t feel less disabled, so please think 1st.

hi

i cant help (after huge attack i needed powerchair) but another factor (for some) might bw using it it on public transoprt. there are rules about can be used. powered cghairs have priority onver scootoers. i spent time with stagecoach an d transpennnnine staff discussing it all. if folk have specifiv qestions i will try to helo but remembert its not official-just my view.

i hope you find the right one fot you

That sounds really interesting. Could you please give me the details of your ‘scoot?’ I like the sound of it.

I looked up this wheelchair on their website and although expensive it looks amazing. I have a scooter but I do not feel safe

when using it and although advertised as light weight it is too heavy to lift in and out of the car. I also want a scooter/chair that

can be used on grass etc as most scooters seem to be for pavement use.

So many to choose from and I cannot afford to make another expensive mistake.

Thank you for the info.

Sue

I wonder if another thing you could think of is the location you want to visit…whether they are scooter accessible etc. Becuase sometimes places are so small, you can only get in via a wheelchair. If you get a scooter, also consider the battery power and how long it lasts. Does it cover the journey you want to make? Etc .

If i had the chance , I would get an electric wheelchair, I wouldn’t use it enough. Dont forget you can also hire these out from disability shops etc…to test them first.

i have an all terrain wheelchair i use it everyday. I go up the corridor with the dog in my sheltered to get rid of rubbish and when we come back down i can go out through a side door and a path which takes me back to my bungalow so i can use it in and out. it was expensive but worth every penny. i have been outside with it to the park. its quite stable. to be honest i enjoy it as much as my scooter lol.

i have the I GO. it is really lightweight and folds so easy even i can fold it. it goes in boot of car with little effort. and unfolds with just a catch. the beauty of it is the battery are inside the legs so not heavy you just click and pull them out and can just choose to power up one and it goes quite a long way on one. or you can power it up with a power pack like a laptop. so NO HEAVY lifting of batteries. Its very good that way. it has a bag underneath too for carrying bits and pieces.

best thing i bought myself to be honest. when i need too i can use it in doors too.

so far i have had it a year and driven quite safely with it.

Hiya Sue, I had a 3 wheeled scooter which I had fallen off more times than I care to remember! So I was looking for something that I would feel safe in and could fit in tight spaces (in the unlikely event that we’ll ever be allowed into cafe’s again!) Without wishing to sound like an advert I have noticed that where I bought mine from have used models. I’m not getting anywhere near the use out of mine that I had hoped to yet unfortunately, but not sorry I bought it.

Thankyou for all replies - its interesting a couple of you said you didnt feel safe on a scooter, i would have thought that would make you feel safer than a chair.

My plan is to have it for holidays or “walks” in this country. at the moment i can walk for about 10 mins with crutches and FES, so can leave it to go into shops or cafes, but if i went “walks” with friends or family i would need some form of mobility aid.

Lots of ideas to think about, thanks, A

where have all the replies gone that were on here this morning?
