Bruising

I am new to this. I was diagnosed with MS 4 month ago and don’t really understand the hole ms thing yet so this might sound silly but i have noticed i am bruising a lot like last night i went to bed fine and got up today with a black eye it is very painful and last week the same but with my arm went to bed fine wake up black and blue. has anybody had this or am i just strange

Welcome to the forum! I have had ms a number of years and have never heard of this before.

It might be a good idea to speak to your ms nurse or gp about this. Not everything is related to ms.

Best get it checked out.

Hi,

I agree with Teresa: abnormal bruising is not an MS symptom.

The only way it could possibly be related is that (a) balance and coordination problems can make us more accident prone, and (b) sensory problems can mean we don’t always realise at the time that we have hurt ourselves. So that could, in theory, explain why somebody with MS might get more bruises than average, and not always know how they happened.

However, I think it’s very unlikely that even someone quite clumsy, and with a dulled pain response, could hurt themselves badly enough to get a black eye, and have no idea how or when it happened. You would remember if you’d hit your face, even if it didn’t really hurt.

So I think this definitely needs checking out. I don’t know what meds you’ve been put on - if any - for the MS, but some drugs can cause abnormal bruising, so maybe it’s that? If so, the culprit needs to be identified and discontinued.

Hi Foxyroxy,

I agree with the other posters about getting it checked out, but also, do you think you could be suffering from muscle spasms in your sleep? My arms and legs tend to do their ‘own thing’ when I bed down for the night (I now take Baclofen), I just wondered if maybe you might have thrashed around a bit and hurt yourself?
