Bowels

Hi, sorry for posting anon, and my thread, but my bowels are are not good the problem is with urgency I all of a sudden get the feeling I need to go and that’s it I start to empty before I get to the toilet I can’t stop it , this has gone now for at least a month I have been to docs who sent a sample just in case of infection which came back normal but after examination she said the muscle isn’t working and will have liase with ms nurse well good luck with that as she is not good. Has anyone got any advice please. Also doc has given me some Imodium to take but only for when I go out as I haven’t been out for over a month as scared of it happening when out, but haven’t tried it yet as still worried any help would be appreciated. THANKYOU .

I have heard of an operation were they insert a box in your abdomen and your anal muscle will only open when you press a button. I am not sure what the operation is called neither do I know of anyone who has had it.

Another option would be the peristeen option were you could clear your bowels out before you go out.

Thankyou for your reply I will look into it then have a chat with doc next week when I go back to see her.

Hello anon Are you saying you haven’t tried the imodium yet? Sorry, my brain is on go slow today. Give it a try, while your at home and see if it works for you. Then you’ll feel more confident to go out  Ps: we won’t tell doc, if you don’t  Take care Noreen x

Hi.

I was in s similar situation a couple of years ago and it’s not nice. I found my GP a little dismissive of it all, as if it wasn’t a big problem. I felt like saying “you try going out and c**ping yourself all the time, it’s not nice”. Anyhow, so as ever I took things into my own hands , contacted the local continence service and spoke about Peristeen to them over the phone (you can self refer) found out about Peristeen from the web and got all the info, took it to the GP and basically set up my meeting with a Persisteen nurse and hey presto I’ve been using it ever since. From having bowel issues fairly regularly I now have the ability to ‘clear myself out’ and it’s been fantastic. It took a while to get used to it and get it working but after a month or so it was like any other routine and it has been a God send.

Don’t let them fob you off, it’s an embarrassing situation to be in and it can really get you down-don’t let it, make sure they help you and try every avenue you can, Peristeen being just one that has worked for me (so far-touchwood-you know with MS things constantly change! Fingers kept crossed etc etc!)

Good luck and all the best.

Hi

I had this for about a year 13 years ago (didn’t know I had ms then), my doc kept telling me to drink lots, which I did and eventually it did go back to normal.

I would suggest a referral to the continence nurse, he/she should be able to help you. I am going through something similar at present but also get constipation, so it’s all about balance, very embarrassing at times though, good luck and take care. I hope you get some help.

Thankyou for your replies I told ms nurse about this when I saw her 3 weeks ago and she to see how it goes and that was it, tried ringing her on Monday but she on holiday and left number for ms nurse in another area so I rang her but she was on holiday until today but she left number for my ms nurse what a laugh, any way got hold of her today but she’s only going to leave a message for mine to ring me when she gets back so that was a waste of time, I asked for a number for a continence nurse but said no I need to speak mine and that she would decide if I need to see one, it’s like banging my head against a brick wall where ms nurse is concern, my GP is more helpful except doesn’t know a lot about ms. I will look into the peristeen and when I see doc I will ask about it.Thankyou again

[/quote] Moyna, l think it is the Sacral Stimulator that you are referring to - lts a fairly new technology that works for bowel and bladder. l am sure many of us will be interested in this - about time we got some answers to our problems.

Peristeen is also very good. At least you can empty your bowels when you want - and not when ‘they’ decide to!

It won’t hurt to give imodium a try anon. If only until you get sorted with continence nurse. It’s better then being stuck at home all the time. It may help you. Take care x

My incontinence nurse did prescribe Codeine Phosphate and Loperamide [ imodium] to calm my overactive bowel.

Hi Anon Sounds like you have a useless MS nurse. It really is hideous what you are going through. There will be solutions out there but you really need to be pushy - in a nice way to get what you need. Don’t be fobbed off. What I suggest is phoning local hospital and ask to be put through to continence clinic or nurses. Then self refer like BF suggests. There will be an answer it is just finding out what it is. Good luck Min xx

Yes ms nurse is useless told husband when my next appointment comes to see her in three months comes through that he can cancel it, as I can’t believe that she doesn’t want to see me before then with the problems I’m having.I have rang hospital today but they are saying I need to be referred so ringing GP to see what she can do,maybe she will have better luck than me as I have had enough. I have taken some Imodium yesterday but it’s still the same trying some more today. Thankyou again for all your comments.

contact the bowel and bladder clinic - you can self refer

Hello anon Don’t cancel your appointment. You need to go, if only to let the nurse know how you feel. If things don’t improve regarding her behavior then you contact PALS. If you cancel, things will never get better. I hope the Imodium starts working for you soon
