Bowel compaction/ advice needed

Hi new here and looking for advice. My sister who is 28 has been diagnosed with MS for 5 years now, things are bad, cant transfer her legs give way, everything is deteriorating rapidly.
She requires 3x enemas a week and most of the time they work but occasionally she requires her bowels to be mannually excavated but as of today the district nurses are refusing to do this and stating she is to go to hospital to get this done. Does anyone have experience of where i can turn to for help, as the last thing we want is to be waiting hrs on an ambulance when the district nurses could help her. Sorry for the long winded message. Thank you.

Not sure if this is going to help but … ive no experience of compaction but i make sure i drink lots of water and eat lots of fibre - in apples, bran cereal, flax seeds nuts plus using Fibrogel from time to time. It might just be me but a few glasses of red wine also help. Does her MS Nurse have anything to suggest?

That is sad to hear that the District Nurses have become reluctant to help with such an important and basic part of helping your sister’s health and quality of life. I do not know where you should start with this. GP perhaps?

Each sachet of Movicol contains 13,125g of Macrogol, 350,7mg sodium chloride, 178,5mg sodium bicarbonate and 46,6mg potassium chloride.

I hope it helps.

Hallo… I had similar problems for very long time. Used enema and medication every 3 days. The only things that started to help, was while doing this, I started drinking 2 sachets of Movicol in a glass water and another glass water every morning. After 10days I became more regular. Now I don’t use enemas anymore and drink Movicol every 2nd day and feel “normal”. I am in South Africa.

Hi thank you for your reply. I will contact her MS nurse and try and get advise.

I know its a horrible thing to do but they are going to make her wait on an ambulance to then wait in hospital and its putting more pressure on the nurses in the hospital.
Plus all her medical conditions will get worse if she is made to sit and wait.
I will phone the gp on monday hopefully they can help.
Thank you.

Hi Karen thank you. I will let my sister know. Im glad things are better with you.

As KarenVT says and from experience with my Dad as he got old, Movicol or in my Dad’s case, Laxido ( powder dissolved in a glass of water) could help
