Blue badge assessment

hi everyone, I’m going for an assessment for a blue badge and wondered if others have done this and what it entails? I also need to apply for DLA/PIP. Any advice welcome. Thank you.

Hi

Sorry, I can’t help with the Blue Badge assessment as I was awarded mine without an assessment.

I applied for DLA a long time ago, it’s all changed now. I was awarded DLA indefinitely but now I’m just waiting to have to apply for PIP.

Lots of people on here recommend joining the Benefits and Work website http://www.benefitsandwork.co.uk to help with this process.

Good Luck!

Anne

I had an assessment for my badge. Was pretty much asked questions about how I get around, what happens when we go shopping, ex, how walking around the store tires me out. Then was asked to walk a distance, can’t remember how long sorry, to see how I walk. Explained to her that the more I am active, the more walking problems I have, that the more I do the less able I am to walk anywhere. Just made sure to explain to the person doing the assessment that my walking is really effected by pain and distances.

So just be as you are clear and precise as you can about any problems you have and why you need the badge to live a “normal” as possible life,

The easiest way to get a blue badge is to already be getting DLA or PIP for mobility, that way you automatically qualify for one. Otherwise it’s a case of completing the form and maybe having an assessment. Which is what’s happened to you Fishgoose. Basically, if you have a permanent disability and cannot walk 50 metres safely without severe repercussions afterwards, you should qualify. Each local council will have slightly different ways of establishing disability and walking ability so get a look at your local issuing councils’ policy before your assessment. I think an actual physical assessment is fairly unusual, mostly it’s a case of the council sending a form to your GP for confirmation of what you put on the form so ensure your GP knows what you’ve said and what you need them to confirm I usually find that taking a one page ‘crib sheet’ for GPs is useful it reminds them easily of who you are and what you need them to say!

Good luck with it.

Thank you all for the advice. My walking is visibly affected so that will be immediately obvious and I need a stick to get around. It’s affected more by fatigue and pain. I’ll explain that. If I get it great. If not I’ll try again. It would definitely make a difference!

Think in terms of being able to walk no more than 5-6 metres before having to stop and rest for a few moments.
Most councils have some sort of distance in mind, but there is another factor: If you have trouble getting in and out of a car, you may need the door open wide - and hence the extra space beside the average disabled space.

Hi,

Can’t help you with the assessment as I just filled in the form and just got sent one.

On the form I wrote down all my symptoms, pain tingling, foot drop etc. medical appointments, toe off fitting, bought automatic car for ease of driving. I live in a rural area no public transport, use shopmobility scooters to get round town etc etc.

As someone said write it all down so you don’t forget anything.

Good luck, let us know how you got on.

Really useful information there. For example, I would never have thought about the difficulties of getting in and out - which I have- so that’s helpful too. Thank you everyone. I’ll let you know how it goes.

I had the assessment today. Very pleasant assessor. Said I was eligible so will get the badge in three weeks. Thank you everyone!
