I’m not sure if this is to do with the MS or not! Occasionally when I get the urge that I need to pass water, I get sharp pains as well. I’m pretty sure I don’t have a UTI, but when it happens I feel I have to pass water straight away. Thankfully this has only happened a few times but last night when I was trying to go to sleep it happened quite a few times. I was up and down to the loo for about an hour.
I recently saw the continence nurse so that she could teach me to self-catheterise. I had to fill in a questionnaire at the same time asking about my bladder symptoms. One of the questions asked whether or not I had pain in my bladder, so it i’s obviously something that can occur. Whether or not it relates to MS I don’t know. However, I just wanted to let you know Lynne. Teresa xx
I get spasms in my bladder and it feels like sharp stabbing pains. BUT the only way you will know for sure you don’t have a UTI is to get your GP to test your wee. So do that first and rule it out.
If you definitely don’t have a UTI it is possible to have urgency with bladder spasms and it can be quite uncomfortable. You can ask your GP for a referral to a continence nurse for a thorough assessment of your waterworks and then she can recommend what treatment might be best. Don’t be embarrassed by this. It is very common in MS and continence nurses are brilliant and way better than GPs for this sort of thing.
I take a tablet called Oxybutynin to stop the bladder spasms and it has stopped the pain and the urgency.
Hi Lynne, I have problems with my bladder in that I kniow I need to pee but cant its called pis en deux I also have problems with constipation so my neoro perscribed movicol which helps both
Pis en deux is actually the opposite of not being able to pee. It is where you DO pee and then shortly after get the urge to pee again or start to dribble after having gone. Translated from the French it literally means Second Piss.
What you are describing of having the urge to go and not being able to pee is called retention. If the Movicol is not enough and you find you really can’t go for more than 8 hours and are getting a distended or painful bladder do treat it as a medical emergency and head off the E&R to get a catheter popped in as an overly full bladder can cause all sorts of hassles.
Treat it first as an over active bladder, think about what you drink, Try just warm water for some time, not Tea, Coffee, or anything that stimulates your bladder.
