balance problem

I lost my balance last tuesday when my relapse hit its peak its still not back does anyone know how long it takes to come back or at least improve ive been in hospital since sunday waiting for my ms nurse to come see me this morning just want to go home

hi catmummy

have you got a walking stick?

if not, try one - it will give you confidence.

your balance will probably come back.

i’m no expert but in my experience something goes wrong with my body - then it goes back to normal ish (ish because its never quite the same)

then another body part starts to play up, but at least i know by now that it will probably go back to normal-ish.

meanwhile if you have a wii try the wii fit. loads of games for improving your balance.

No i havent im 27 so dont want to go down that route just want my balance back x

it can depend on how bad the loss of balance is, i have completely lost all balance trying to stand and just falling down ,not being able to even lift my head from the pillow, that was scary and has happened a few times when the ms has attacked my brain stem, then loosing some balance where you are a bit wobbly, happens quite often these days,

i was at my worst in a very severe relapse, that left me stuck in bed for 4 months, very slowly i got going again, sounds like yor relaspe is a very severe one,and it will take quit some weeks even months to get better.

I can walk with support they think its because i had a baby 2 weeks ago that is a bad relapse i wont be having any more

Any more babies i meant

My balance was poor during a relapse 5 years ago and it sorted itself out over a few weeks. It wasn’t brilliant but it was good enough to walk about reasonably well. I started yoga sessions and it was improving very gradually.

After 2 relapses last year my balance has gone downhill again and I always look a little drunk when I walk now. I am now seeing a physiotherapist and she has given me some exercises. After the first 6 weeks she can see some improvement so I am now onto the next level of exercises. I haven’t noticed any improvement in my yoga postures but then they are a lot more difficult than the basic balancing I am trying to do. I am determined to get there though. Practice makes perfect, my brain will get there in the end …

I would suggest you ask for a referral to a physiotherapist. Your nurse will arrange this for you. Be prepared for a bit of a wait though. It took 6 months for me to be seen although maybe it’s better in your area.

Yes true i just pray it comes back would be nice to not be housebound and take my daughter to nursery when im out of hospital x

i agree with Tracey ask to see a neuro phsysio though, they are trained to deal with balance issues, ask while you are still in hospital, that way it will be quicker, hope you feel better soon, i know what its like to have a bad relapse after giving birth, but i did recover after a good few month,i had my daughter july had a massive relaspe 6 weeks after,in august and recoverd by the december.

Thats ages ive been relapsing since i was 31 weeks pregnant it got really bad more or less straight after she was borm the ms nurse reasured me i will recover and the worst is over she said the steroids i took will continue to work for another 6 weeks and ill keep improving now hope shes right x

Do you know, I always forget to stress it’s the neuro physio but I’m sure the MS nurse will know that . The reason why the waiting list is so long in my area is that there are only two of them for a large rural area and we have a lot of MSers needing their help. The physiotherapist also arranged for a bath board to be sent out to me to make life much easier when I take a bath or shower. So much easier to get my legs in and out now and I can sit and have a rest when I’m a bit wobbly in the shower.
