Hello,
I had a failed LP attempt over 2 weeks ago (doctor couldn’t get the needle through my back) and I’m still experiencing pain in my back, especially when I bend down for any reason. Does anyone know if this is normal? The doctor tried in a couple of places and seemed to hit a lot of bone (which didn’t feel very nice). As they didn’t get through I’m surprised at the pain, especially now the bruising has gone. Perhaps I’m being impatient.
I’m awaiting an appointment for another LP attempt via X-ray guidance but not so sure about it if this pan isn’t going to go …
Thank you.
hi butterfly cake
how awful for you.
i had heard that lumbar puncture is not strictly necessary to diagnose ms.
if your MRI shows lesions that should be enough for dx.
it is a scary invasive procedure.
my own LP went well but 3 days later i was in a real mess.
my gp said it was through having my cerebro spinal fluid removed and prescribed diazepam to knock me out.
see if you can find anything out that confirms what i had heard about it not being necessary.
good luck

Thanks for your reply Carole. I’m sorry that you had such a difficult time after your LP.
My MRI was clear, hence neurologist wanting to do the LP. I’m having problems with my eyes (double vision and eye coordination) although the mobility issues have improved, hence why they want to do the LP. But I’m not sure I want to go through it again, and I just hope the back pain eases. The whole situation is really getting me down now - but I know that so many people are worse off and so I can’t complain really.
Thanks again Carole and all the best to you.
ah that is a true bummer
would your neuro be able to talk you through it?
you’ll be a very brave girl if you go through it again.
some medics are able to find the spot easily but others are not.
maybe ask for a senior doctor to do it?
also ask for valium to take beforehand (ask your gp).
good luck brave butterly

Thanks again Carole. I’ll see how I feel about another LP when the next appointment comes through - and hope the back pain has eased by then.
I hope all is well with you?
Take care x
