Awful lumbar puncture!

Hi Karina, I posted my awful experience with an lp last week. Your`s sounds much worse and mine was bad enough, so I do feel for you.

I laid flat for 2 hours, but no-one told me about drinking coke or coffee, so I did get the headache, which only went yesterday.

I am now suffering with back pain and vow NEVER to have another lp again.

People who are awaiting an lp will read your`s and my stories and be scared to go ahead.

The majority of lps go without such problems, so I hope we don`t stop folk having them. But I do believe we should highlight the problems in an effort to get better treatment.

luv Pollx

Yeah I didn’t want to scare anyone off wanted to make sure that I highlighted that if anyone has scoliosis or a problem with their back to ensure that they have an X-ray guided lumbar. Thankfully I still haven’t got the lumbar headache and hope I don’t get it. I do however still have really bad back pain! Here’s a question for you Poll and for everyone else - has anyone been referred for a PET scan and has anyone had one done? I will start a new post with that question to get more accurate answers but thought it might be useful to put it here too

So sorry to read this. COMPLAIN, if only to make it less likely for anyone else to suffer like this. I thought my LP was bad - the specialist nurse took nine attempts to get into my spine. I’d previously suffered a burst fracture in the same area and am not sure if that caused the problem. The same nurse was useless at taking my blood, she said it was difficult because my blood pressure was ‘very low’. I think it was difficult because she was useless!!! She left one needle dangling in my hand whilst she searched for a specimen bottle. The needle twisted, breaking the vein and causing a huge bruise and swelling on the back of my hand. She then had to try a different vein in my arm.

After a lot of thought I complained to my consultant and he advised me that the nurses were told to make only two or at the most three attempts, then to re schedule for an x-ray guided LP. I wish I had complained at the time but I felt so vulnerable and I desperately wanted the test to be finished.

That’s shocking hopefully you will feel better soon and I’d definitely put a complaint in .
