Have been reading some shocking news about using sweeteners or diet drinks. Does anyone have any definite information or proof of the damage this stuff can cause? Jennifer
Hi about a week ago, there was quite a bit of talk about it on here.
I think the conclusion was that it doesnt cause MS, if thats what you
re wondering about.

I gather its not a great thing bu it doesn’t cause m.s…reportedly can cause m.s like symptoms but I do have a friend who had to cut this out of her diet as I gave her very bad migraines. She has no got m.s … She did find cutting it out helped. I have cut it out but I am very much of the opinion that it probably does not have any affect on the m.s however with the bad press it has it may not be good M.S or no M.S. Hope this helps x
I used to have very frequent migraine and discovered about 3 years ago, through reading information on the subject, that the sweetener Aspartame can very often cause a migraine. Since I have excluded it from my diet along with foods containing monosodium glutamine (my apologises if spelling wrong)! This has reduced the number of times I have a migraine by around 80%! I took advice also from a Natural Health Practitoner, to avoid sugars in general and also to reduce my consumption of dairy products. I take Rice Milk with added Vitamin D plus a supplement of Vitamin D and my relapses are less frequent and less severe, over the past year.
A healthy diet with very few additives of any sort is definetly a good thing when living with M.S!
Yes. (As in, ‘Yes there is definite information that it causes no harm except to those with a rare inherited disease called PKU’.) Here is the link to the Food Standards Agency’s statement.

Yes, Aspartame certainly does not suit everyone - l have a friend who reacts very badly to it. lt means she now has to read the small print on all food/drink. But more importantly on meds. She has found it in several types of anti-biotics. Last year she was asked to help in some research into it at Hull University. They offered to pay her rail fare and hotel accomodation - but as she lives such a long way from Hull - she did not fancy being dosed with aspartame and being away from home whilst covered in a dreadful skin reaction.
My OH is diabetic - and his GP warned him against using sweetener that was Aspartame. We now avoid it - just to be on the safe side.

Thanks everyone for your replys, very interesting x
Jennifer,
Had a phone call from my friend - who l told you about with the intolerance to aspartame. She was out with friends and asked for a ‘spritzer’ to drink. After only a couple of ‘slurps’ she started reacting - rash and lumps coming out all over her body - in her mouth and ears - even around her eyes. She checked straightaway to see what had been put in her spritzer - and it was slimline lemonade instead of soda water. She was rushed to A&E - as her throat was closing up and really frightening her as it was impossible to swallow. At A&E they new straightaway that it was Aspartame as it happens quite often.
l told her that l had mentioned her story on here - and she said make sure you all know what could happen. She is now allergic to aspirin as well. She said she now wishes she had gone to Hull University to help them with their research. Because she might have helped prevent others from suffering. Aspartame is banned in some countries.
