Amitriptyline

Hi,

I have been on amitryptyline for about 4 years, but I started taking it to keep my electric shock feelings and severe pain in my right leg at ease. I started on 10mg but I have been up to 70mg at times

I suffer from numbness as well in my legs (mainly right) but it doesn’t get rid of that.

It has never made me excessively tired as I suffer from fatigue which is different to normal effects of tiredness.

It did cut the amount of times I went to the loo in the night (sometimes 8 or 9 times!).

It has never taken the pins and needles feeling away or burning sensation.

Good luck and hope it helps.

Pleased it is helping you Sandra.

It’s still early days for me at the moment so hopefully i will see some benefit soon.

How long before going to bed Should you take it?

Thanks

Hi,

I take it about half and hour before bed, but I don’t think it really matters. When I had my horrendous relapse last April I was taking 25mg at night, 25mg when I got up in themorning, 10mg at lunch time and 10mg at tea time.

Sandra

Amitriptyline does nothing for the pins & needles abs numbness in my leg - I take Pregabalin for that - but it does help pain I get in my arm and as a bladder suppressant.

Thanks for all the advice.

Hi Irons, I am on 10mg of Amitryptiline for TN. You are supposed to take it all the time but I only do it when theTN rears its ugly head. It does help sleeping and I take one tablet at night and one in the morning. Works for me with no side effects but it does make you want to sleep, no bad thing! I also have 100mg of carbomazapine when the TN is really bad as an alternative. Works for me. Try it, if it doesn’t work look at other options. TN is a pain I would not wish on anyone (except perhaps David Cameron lol) Linda x

My GP prescribed me amytriptiline yesterday and I took 20mg last night to help with pain and aid sleep. I still woke a couple of times in the night but fell back to sleep easily. It definitely helped. xx

Pleased it is working for you and you got a better nights sleep.

My dose has been increased this week to 20mg.

I find i sleep better and i don’t get up as many times through the night for the toilet.

Hi,

I haven’t been on here for a while so just found this thread, I’ve just been prescribed this recently. It was a consultant who prescribed it and when I asked my GP for a repeat he was worried because I’m already taking Citalapram. He did give the repeat but he seems to be worried about an interaction with the drugs. I’m taking 10mg of citalapram and 20mg of amytriptiline at night to help me get through the night without waking up for the loo every hour.

Has anyone else come across this? It really is working for me I’m actually getting some sleep now, so I’m reluctant to give it up. I didn’t know that it was prescribed for pins and needles though, it doesn’t seem to be doing anything for me in that respect. So I can’t help you in that respect Irons…but personally getting some sleep now so I think it’s great in that way. Just worried GP has said about interaction with citalapram so would like some advise about that if any of you lovely peeps out there know anything.

The consultant who prescribed it did know what other meds I’m on so maybe it’s just my GP being vigiliant…

Take Care
