advice needed please.....next steps??

Hi, Hoping some of you maybe able to offer some pearls of wisedom. My hubby got diagnosed with ms last dec and since june the gp has signed my hubby off from work each month (hubby works in a huge warehouse and constantly on the go) anyway on friday hubby had to meet with occupitonal health at his work and they have said that my hubby cant be at work there for reasons being the warehouse is too big and the toilets and exits are too far for him to walk comfterably that his job is to strenous on him and he could not do a admin job there because he wouldnt be able to type as he has lost feeling un his hand and cant type write or hold things properly. So occy health have sent a form for hubby to fill in and send back this is basicly a permision slip to authorise that occy health can write to his doctor,so i was wondering, what happens next where do we go from here, any advice would be fab. Thanks

Hi darlin,

He should think about changing his job; you say he can’t do admin because of typing; what about speech software that enables him to speech the words and the computer types it?

Contact Access to Work who will organise and pay 80% of; the company pays the rest; software say Dragon; or even Hardware if he needs it; https://www.gov.uk/access-to-work

Good luck

George

Hi, I work in the office of a company with a large warehouse so I can understand how your hubby may be struggling to get around the warehouse and get to the toilets and yes also the exits, I guess reaching the exits quickly could be a big issue in a fire or other emergency. So does the company he works for do anything other than warehousing because the simple solution would be for him to move to another job. I guess it might come down to whether there are any vacant positions within the company. I don’t buy into the fact that he cant do an admin job because he can’t type or write or hold things properly. As George says there is speech recognition software, that is one potential solution. Not all admin jobs are typing, there are sales and reception work. I think the possibility of moving to a desk job needs to be fully explored and looking at ways of working around the typing issue rather than just saying he can’t do it. I wonder is it a big company he works for, are there other jobs within the company? Don’t give up yet and good luck. Cheryl:-)

Hi, well when I was heading for early retirement through ill health, my Personnel manager came to see me, with my line manager, after 8 months on the sick.

I had already seen a doctor of their choosing, who advised them i was not fit for the job I was employed.

I was told there were no suitable vacancies for me and offered a decent retirement package.

i havent worked since, due to rapidly progressing disability.

Hope things work out well for your hubby.

luv Pollx

Hiya.

Last year I was in a similar position.

Work told me that they couldn’t make any more adjustments to my role to make it safe and that I could either go off sick for 12mnths (as they wouldn’t have me in the workplace) and take my chances with the benefit system,or agree to see occy health with a view to ill health retirement.

I officially retired aged 44 last month,I was in the local authority pension scheme so things have worked out ok,plus I am in a position to find work should I need to but my health has improved dramatically since that pressure has gone.

Is hubby in a pension scheme and does he have a union rep he could talk to?
