Hi there. I am new to the forum but I have had MS nearly 40 years. I suffer
from muscle stiffness but over the past 6 months I have been getting big muscle spasms in a large area of my abdomen above and below the navel. They occur after I have been asleep for about 4 Hours. Just a tiny movement sets them off. As soon as Iget up they stop. Anyone else had this?
Hi and welcome @marie.emson I can’t comment on your night time muscle spasms in your abdomen as it’s not something I’ve ever experienced. I do get night time cramps which although it’s also to do with the muscles, it’s different. Like you the way to get the cramps to stop is to get up and standing up, preferably. Harder than it sounds as I’m usually wrapped up like an Egyptian mummy! Sheets tightly wrapped around me. I have been suffering with muscle tightness recently. Top of my legs and it is uncomfortable. Wishing you well and hopefully your recent night time muscle spasms will be short-lived.
Do your spasms come with tingling and a prickly on and off burning sensation? I thought I had a uti but urgent care ruled that out. Thank you
Hi there. No tingling or prickly feeling at all. Just a very fast locking of the muscle so I can barely move. It is the same feeling as an electric shock ie it feels like tetany of the muscles.
Since I made this post I have found the spasms are made much worse by taking statins. After I stopped taking them I read that statins can cause a calcium drain from the muscle in some people. Low calcium can cause nerve over excitability which can cause tetany.
All just a theory of course but it does make me wonder as coming off the stains helped me a lot.
