Writing Problems

Cant hardly type let alone write any more. I used to have a triangular thing to slip over a pen which gave more grip but even that became impossible to use. I would love to draw but cant make a line appear straight but suprisingly I hold the pen on my kindle but that is for dabbing at the screen I play cards and turn the pages. I am odd but I was befor my MS

I’m right handed and it’s my left hand that’s problematic and my right leg - weird.

I have to literally watch what I’m writing now, I can’t do that thing where I’m looking at the computer screen and writing notes… my brain still works well enough that I look at what I’ve written and think, oh no, that’s wrong!

Yes, I’ve had something very similar. My grip gradually became weaker, and holding a pen for more than a few minutes became uncomfortable. My handwriting also got much smaller and harder to read. I found that using a chunky ergonomic pen or adding a soft foam grip made it much easier to hold.

For longer pieces of writing, I eventually stopped struggling with a pen and started using Dragon speech recognition software to dictate letters, emails, and documents on my computer. It was much less tiring than trying to force my hand to cooperate, and it saved a lot of frustration.

It might also be worth asking your MS nurse or an occupational therapist for advice. They can recommend writing aids or hand exercises if they’re appropriate for your symptoms.

You’re certainly not alone—problems with grip, hand weakness, and writing are quite common with MS. I hope you find something that makes everyday writing a little easier.
