What is an active lesion

Hi, I’m sorry if this is a silly question but I keep reading about active and non active lesions and i wondered if anyone can tell me what this means please

An active lesion is one where there is inflammation which is damaging the myelin sheath. You may be having a relapse at this time and having more symptoms, though some active lesions will be symptomless.

In an MRI with contrast an active lesion will show as a lighter glow. Usually lesions are active for typically 3 months, and the glow on the MRI gradually lessens over this time. Inactive lesions are where the inflammation has stopped, and damage to the sheath has stopped. The MS Trust explains it very well. Some lesions can heal themselves and not show themselves on subsequent scans.
