What food?

My husband has advanced MS - and we’ve been told he probably only has a week or so to go. He’s still managing to swallow, but not chew - am strugggling with meals!

He can do soup, noodles, today I’m gonna try him with shepherds pie (in the hope we can blend it a bit if too much for him)… but give me some suggestions of things that don’t look like baby food! He’ll still have his weetabix (if completely mushed with milk), and small bits of chocolate which he leaves to melt in his mouth. Am also making apple crumble today - with the apples well over cooked!

Any suggestions welcome!

It sounds like you’re doing a wonderfull job all by yourself! Well done you, in such difficult circumstances.

What about sweet stuff? How about a lovely rich chocolate mousse, or some of the high quality ice creams? Or if its savoury he wants, what about humous or taramasalata, or mashed avacado?

My dad couldn’t tolerate much food in the end (stomach cancer), but he’d always enjoyed food, and what he did eat, he wanted to taste and appreciate, even in tiny quantities.

Wishing both all the very best, and remember to look after youself too xxx

What about trying yoghurt, there are the greek style ones with honey and the very smooth set yoghurts with different flavours. Main meals are awkward. What about spagetti bolognaise, whizzed first without the meat, there are some excellent tomato mixes in jars, very flavoursome.

My wishes go out to you both. I hold your hand in friendship, love and care.

Dear Anonymous,

I had problems swallowing (not chewing though) a while back. One thing I found I could eat was Pringles crisps. Because they’re reconstituted, when you get them in your mouth they sort of disintegrate into mush which I found easy to swallow and didn’t really need any chewing.

Don’t know if this will work for your husband, but might be worth a go.
