Mel my hips and knees always ache, I don’t know how that relates to the ms, I know the nerve pain is definitely ms and thought the joints hurt mostly because my gait changed as my balance deteriorated. No matter what causes it, it’s really painful. I wonder if physio might help but it didn’t do me much good, I’ve been put on painkillers. I’m involved in a study that Cambridge are doing on pain in ms so will let you know when I hear back but until then you need to see your gp and get the pain under control. As my gp told me, we shouldn’t have to suffer pain on top of everything else, it can be controlled.
Everyone deteriorates differently, I seemed to get symptoms one after the other in the beginning leading up to and just after my dx which took 2 1/2 years, then I seemed to hit a bit of a plateau. My symptoms don’t change much now I just have days where they seem okay and I can cope with them and bad days where they are much worse. I’m learning to try and balance my days so that I can rest between days where I have to go out and spread my chores out over the week. It’s very hard not to get despondent when different part of your body seems to be becoming affected, I know I was frustrated, and still feel that way at times, I think you need to look at your life and see if you’re not overdoing things. Remember that fatigue makes things much worse. I hope you feel better soon.

Hi Mel, welcome to our motley club. I often think I am a walking wreak and a very slow walking wreak at that! But hey at least we are moving! Take care, M
Hi Mel, with MS there is primary and secondary pain. Primary is caused by the nervous system and only certain drugs… amitriptyline, gabapentin etc will help. Secondary is caused by they movement problems with have with MS… so if your gait is bad it’s possible that you are putting extra pressure on your knees which is causing the pain. Physio can sometimes help with those problems… so worth a go. And now that I’ve said that I’m going to contradict it. That is what the ‘official’ sources say about pain and MS… but after a good few years of MS and a few years on these boards I think that MS causes all sorts of pain that don’t fit into the text book descriptions. So it’s worth seeing physio just in case… but it may be just one of those damned MS mysteries! What drugs are you taking? Have you tried the 1 paracetamol plus 1 ibuprofin combo! Very good for all sorts of pain (no more than 3 times a day). PPMS progresses at different rates for everyone. For instance mine was really stable for about 3 years… then since August last year I’ve had quite a bit of progression. Also it can stop progressing altogether… called a ‘plateau’… nobody knows why. Hope that’s helpful and not adding to confusion, Pat xx
Yep in short Mel it hurts but painkillers help. Sometimes my legs hurt just laying in bed. Iam now in a wheelchair but it has taken me 20 years to get to this Part of the rollercoaster of MS me thinks, smile coz then the pain dont know how to react
