Vitamin d problems

Hi everyone, I am on 20,000iu vitamin d supplement 3 times a week from my doctors because my vit d level was low,I have been on it since beginning of December. For the last week I am getting bloating in my stomach and wind and I feel constipated, has anyone had this problem.I have never been a person to go a toilet everyday but I have never felt like this. any advice please.

Hi Anon,

I’m curious why you put this down to the vitamin D? From what you say, you’ve been on it around two months, but only had problems for the last week? I would have thought, if you were going to have a bad reaction to something, it wouldn’t take nearly two months to show itself.

You don’t mention whether you’re actually diagnosed with MS, or just the low vitamin D, at the moment. But if you have MS, bowel or digestive problems are not uncommon. It might be part of your condition, rather than to do with the vitamin supplements. Also many drugs commonly prescribed for MS can have similar side-effects. Codeine for pain, for example, is well known for causing constipation. Amitriptyline’s another one!

Why not get your vit D level tested? If it’s fine, then it’s unlikely to be causing your gastro problems.

Have you been taking calcium with the vitamin D? If you have, this is well known to cause constipation. If you haven’t, then you need to make sure you get plenty of calcium in your diet - milk, cheese, sardines all contain it. If you don’t have enough, calcium can leech out of your bones as your vitamin D levels rise, making you vulnerable to osteoporosis. As Anitra said, constipation is a common MS symptom. I find split linseeds sort it out for me but I know they don’t help everyone.
