Hi, Just wondering if any of the in the know amongst you could help me understand a bit better a Dr’s letter I have read? The letter meal as reference to “systemic conditions/diseases” Would MS be considered a systemic condition/disease? Tia! X
This means a any condition effecting a particular body system (nervous system, circulatory system etc) I would think this would be the non specific description of a condition at an early stage in diagnosis.
Hello Tia
When used medically, systemic means involving the whole body, or several different areas of the body, such as different organs.
MS is not a systemic disease because it only involves the nerves, ie it’s restricted to the Central Nervous System. It has the appearance of being systemic because the nerves themselves affect so many different areas of the body, but it’s not.
So if your doctors letter suggests that you have a systemic disease, then it’s not MS. Systemic disease include fibromyalgia, lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome, thyroid disease (both under and over active thyroid), rheumatoid arthritis, and many, many others.
One of the problems in diagnosing MS is that so many symptoms resemble the symptoms of other diseases, including many systemic diseases.

Thank you both for this. Sue - Doctor’s letter is saying they aren’t convinced any systemic disease is at play. Which I knew was in reference to lupus but it didn’t make clear whether MS, which they had initially made clear they were suspicious of, is systemic or not. And I didn’t know. Guess it isn’t then. Thanks again for the replies

Sorry for this but I’m just giving a little bump to this post just because I’m still trying to find some clarification on it & the two replies above were brill but a bit conflicting. Thanks again in advance!
