SPMS and spasms in hand

Does anyone else have really painful spasms in their hands that make your hand into a claw while it lasts? I’ve had two wrist surgeries for de Quervains tenosynovitis in the last three years, and they’ve been unsuccessful in getting rid of the pain. But since the last one I get this spasm in my hand often for no apparent reason. I was sent for an eeg to rule out epilepsy and that was clear. I have an appointment with my neurologist in August but wondered if I should see my GP before then to rule out other wrist problems. I also get bad pins and needles like I’m holding a ball with nails pointing outwards into my hands. It seems I have further new thoracic lesion which she also wants to talk about. Fatigue has also been getting to me recently too. Any advice out there or fellow sufferer with this hand problem?

Hi Katie, spasms in hands tell me about it.

Your question is not a straight forward one to answer as as you know buzzing and tingling is associated with MS but it can also be that you have a secondary condition like carpal tunnel syndrome and or a trapped nerve further up your arm into your neck.

I am not saying that either of these things are what you have and generally, at least carpal tunnel it doesn’t cause hand spasms, well so I am told.

I have had carpal tunnel surgery for buzzing and tingling which as a rule affects the thumb and the next 2 fingers. It was horrible. In fact twice on one hand.

Nerve conduction studies are they way to diagnose carpal tunnel and nerve impingement in the neck, for which quess what you will need a referral. By the time it comes through it could well be August.

Perhaps a phone call to your GP to discuss may well be worth while. As they say you have nothing to lose.
