SPIRULINA

Hi pals!

Recent posts/replies concerning spirulina, have prompted me to give it a try.

My reasons for this is because it is known to help with detox (I take bucket loads of meds, like many of us), fatigue and weight loss.

I`m buying it from a local health food shop, after discussing it with an assistant there.

Its £12.99 for a months supply.

My reason for posting is this;

the shop assistant warned against taking it when on hormonal meds…like HRT and thyroxin.

I`ll let you know if I think it helps.

Hi Polly

I am really interested to see what you think. I got some after reading posts on here and have been taking them for about 4 days now. My first issue is - the tablets are HUGE (well to me they are) I really struggle to get them down, and you have to take 3, 3 times a day. Also - I have had a very dodgy tummy since starting (I am assuming its these - but may not be). Apart from that I am not noticing. The lady in my health food shop said you can buy it in powder form too and mix it into juice or something.

Good luck - will look forward to hearing your thoughts on it!

Excellent Poll, I hope you get some satisfactory results, and this is what we should do if we are ‘Guinea-Pigging’.Everybody is well aware that we have our own version of MS and stuff affects us differently, but putting a post up is good for everybody

In a few days I should have the results of a ‘home test’ for vitamin D3,then I can cobble together my experiences of the stuff over the past month.

Thanks Poll, KIATIAT,

l am taking the Rainforest Spirulina - 300x500mg tabs £11.99 free delivery. lt is recommended to take 6 tabs a day - either in one go or divided into 2 or 3 times aday. For people who have trouble swallowing pills l must warn you they are big - and the fact they are bright green is a bit off putting. l take 4 first thing in thing - in fact in bed - and l take the Chlorella [3] later in the morning. They certainly have curbed my appetite - even over xmas with all the temptations about.

l should think you could crush them between two spoons. But l am quite good at swallowing tablets and can do two at a time.

Be interesting to see how we all get on - how much weight we lose - how much more energy we get.

For what it’s worth.

I took this stuff for a year and it didn’t do me any harm or any good as far as I could tell.

I was getting it really cheap as as part of a multi level marketing programme and stopped taking it when the price went up.

I now just take D3 as a supplement. It’s cheap and does you the world of good — does nothing for weight lose though.

Hi, I struggle with Spirulina as it irritates my bladder and makes me sore. I believe I have Interstitial Cystitis (IC) so have quite a restricted diet anyway, but as things are improving (thanks to Desert Harvest Aloe Vera capsules and only drinking alkaline water) I’ve been tying to get more nutrition into my body and bought some Green Vibrance Powder. Still made me a little tender, but at least with a powder you can easily adjust the amount you take so intend to give it another go now my “system” has reset. Would expect it to be several months before any benefits were noticeable. Heather

Hi all.

Took my first Spirulina today. I got capsules…easier to swallow than big tablets, probably. I didnt fancy the powder version.

i smelt them first…mistake! The smell stays with you for a while. Yeuk! Anyway I took 2 with brekkie and they went down easily. Then 1 with lunch.

Dosage recommended is 3-6 a day, but to start low.

Bottle says high potency organic, but doesn`t give amount in each capsule.

I spoke to a senior shop assistant, who said there isn`t a problem when taking with any hormone meds. That was more to do with kelp (seaweed) and this is algae…not the same thing. So sorry for the mis-information I gave.

I think you’ll find that seaweed is algae. So may be worthy of further research. I wouldn’t want you or anyone else coming to any harm.

Oh chuffin eck! That assistant may have been wrong then, eh?

So I think if anyone is on hormone meds, to check it with GP, if they fancy trying Spirulina, eh?

Ta for the input.

Poll,

The spirulina l am taking distinctly says to take on an empty stomach - with water and not to eat or have a hot drink for at least half an hour. l think this must be to give it a good chance to ‘do its thing’ on its own and not mixed with other food/fluid in your tum.

lts a freshwater algae - so whether this is very different from salt-water seaweed - l do not know. l was taking Sea ~Kelp -anyway because of my enlarged thyroid - which l do not take meds for - l prefer to take the natural form of iodine.

hi Frances, on the bottle of my spirulina it says best taken around meals…have I interpreted it wrong? i am taking it with meals.

Just had to leave half my pud of apple, pear in yogurt, as i was full. My main was mince, mushrooms on a jacket spud…a modest amount.

Poll, So you already have found that ‘full feeling’ - l am now using a smaller plate. Leaving food on my plate is against everything l was brought up that l had to do. l was certainly never allowed a pudding if l did not eat my dinner. Last night l could not eat all of my main course - OH finished it - then he wanted me to try some of his Plum Frangipane Tart that he had made [just call him Mary Berry] - l can see him getting fatter while l just keep on losing.

l did watch Embarrassing Fat Bodies last night. lt is enough to put you off fattening food for life. One very obese chap had so much fat hanging off his belly that he could not find his willie when he needed to pee!!!

One poor woman who once weighed 30st. had lost so much weight after weight loss surgery that her body looked like an old sofa that had lost all its filling. She was having surgery to remove and reshape her body - from under her arms - her boobs belly and thighs. l think this sort of drastic weight loss is too quick and does not give the body/skin time to adjust. 1 lb a week l should think is the best way to lose weight and keep it off.

Allo again Frances.

I also watch anything about obesity/slimming on tv. When they show these super obese folk, who weigh 25, 30 and more stones and then decide to lose weight, i wonder how they get so big before they realised they aren`t doing themselves any favours. And who fetches the food for them? At my heaviest before hsp, the most I weighed was 15.4lb and I lost 7st with Weight Watchers. My skin wasnt too bad, but I did need and have a boob lift after. I had a slightly loose belly button area, which I tucked into sloggi knickers! I then went to work for WW! I kept the weight off for 5 years…the rest is history, as it was when my mobility problems began.
