Registering as disabled

Can you register yourself as disabled. Do u have to b in receipt of dLA, because I do not think I would qualify, I would if I filled the application at my worst but ok now only have slight numbness in two fingers an toes on left foot. I ask this question as i can not afford to move out but council said I would get help if I register myself as disabled. I need to move out as my mother abuses alcohol and I find it very stressful when I come home every day from work. I know that’s her illness but I get so angry as she doesn’t want help and I get so stressed.

as far as I know there is no disabled register - I think some places take a blue badge or dla letter as proof if it’s needed

i did not know you could register as disabled?

Local councils used to have a list of disabled people and you could ask them to put you on that list. Some have a list a registered wheelchair users. Every council is different so best to ring them and ask what you need to do, ours has a ‘gateway to care’ section who deal with blue badges and disabled rights etc. Could you get your Gp to support your move, as it is affecting your mental and physical health.

There used to be a disabled register – years ago but it doesn’t exist now. As has already been mentioned, some local councils have a kind of register but most places use DLA as the measure.

I think you need to explore a little further what the council worker meant who gave you this advice. It’s true that most housing depts. will give priority to disabled applicants. I was visited and assessed before I was given medical priority on my housing application. I had to show that my disability made the housing that I already had unsuitable. It wasn’t enough that I had higher rate DLA for both care and mobility it was the fact that my house had very steep access and steps that made it unsuitable. The symptoms that you have described would perhaps not meet this criteria.

You mentioned that you work – would private rented make life more pleasant? I know that there is less security than a council rental but also no waiting list. Your council will probably have a list of approved landlords.
If you don’t earn very much you could get help with your rent from Housing Benefit. You sound young though and HB under 25 is not so great.

i am on the housing register and have enough points to be given housing, its just the cost of living in London is so high, i could pay rent and struggle with bills, food and clothing my child.

I asked the coucil could i get assistance via HB and was told i would have to register disabled via DLA, but i said i would not qualify (would not even bother trying to apply), as i am reasonably healthy. She said it doesnt matter apply.

So really confused. She said if i was registered disabled my HB premium would go up and i would get assistance paying my rent.

lf you have a diagnosis of MS - which is progressive disease - l do not see why you can’t use this fact to help you get alternative accommadation. Living as you do with your mum is far from ideal and the stress/anxiety will make your health worse.

Ask your GP for help - a letter from them saying how detrimental to your health it is living with your mum.

Speak to yor local housingf association and look into getting on their registar. I really wanna move out of my mums house as I dont get on with her or my brother. 3 Doctors have given me letters to support my rehousing in a ground floor flat or bungalow as I really struggle with stairs. Iam unemployed so cant really afford to move out either but I know that because I am unemployed and in need of rehousing that my council will pay my rent and I don’t pay council tax.

I can also get help with furnishing the flat from the housing association or from my local freecycle group try and find your local CAB and see what they say and good luck, I am still trying to find a place of my own and get away from the stress and agression where I currently am.

Hope you sort something

Jon

hi all

im on the local council list for housing, was assessed, and was described as serious medical need, but also says im not prioritised. im going to speak to my MS nurse again. she and my other medical people all have written to tell them what ive said, but im getting nowhere. am stuck in a house-i have trouble with the stairs enormously, plus the loo is upstairs,so ill not always make it,lol. im bidding on bungelows(flats r not a good idea, tried it and dont care to do so again!!) but most r for 50+. this shouldnt matter, but i feel cos im under that age im being overlooked. the rent here is taking most of my DLA,so im also fretting about the PIP thing coming soon(the ESA was a farce, and i had a bad time with atos)

Hello everyone,

You said “I would if I filled the application at my worst but ok now only have slight numbness in two fingers an toes on left foot.”

When you fill out disability forms always put down the worst scenario. It is all too easy to talk your health up, lets face it this is human nature.

My advice is this

  1. Get the DLA forms, fill in the easy bits like name and addess

  2. Write down on a separate peice of paper answers to other questions, put down worst scenario. Find a friend, spouse, neighbour or MS professional who you know well and together build up the answers to the rest of the form. Take your time. If you can jump through 3 hoops now but last week it was only 1 then put down 1 hoop. They, ATOS or whoever, can only go on what they read. Get doctor or neurologist to supply medical notes.

  3. Under no circumstances put form into tray marked ‘tomorrow’ and forget about it.

The DLA states your level of mobility and ability to look after yourself.

I’m sorry if I sound cross, it makes me angry when people winge about the not winning the game but don’t play the game by the rules,

Good luck,

Patrick

My council gave me a yellow card which states that i’m disabled. Gets me free swimming at a local pool

Patrick,s right!! Always put down your worsed days! People without this damn illness havent got a clue about its “nasty” symptoms, which are profound & flippin scary! Just cos you have “good” days doesnt mean it will always be that way! Sorry to be so blunt, but there are people who are getting DLA for acne & being overweight!!! MS is life changing, no ifs or buts, it messes with your mind as well as your body. I really hope that you have far more “good” days than bad, & you remain as well as possible but get what help you can. MS team will back it with your dx. Goodluck & apologies for the rollockin! Tracey xx
