hi there i am on pregabalin and my weight just seems to keep going up and up .is this a problem everyone has or is it just me.my gp had a great diet made up for me (bless her) however the wait just seems to keep piling on me.its terrible i,ve put on 3 stones in 2 years .my joints are killing me need to loose weight.anybody got any advice ,can,t do too much exercise as my mobility is not great.so be grateful for any helpful advice before i turn into a balloon.
I’ve been on pregabalin for some years now , and yes my weight steadily rose as time went on , I also think it was due to lack of activity though , I was once working hard manually (years ago) then suddenly not ! , anyway I also thought it was the pregabalin , and got to about 17st , from about 13st ,
anyway , after giving up on it all , I suddenly got some terrible stomach pain one day , straight off to A and E , I’d got gall stones , and they put me on a special diet ,(mostly non dairy) and helped by the pain of it as an incentive , I lost weight week on week , about 2 Ib a week in fact , until I was back to 13st , by which time they’d done the op too , anyway my point is that I was on Pregabalin throughout all of this (450mg a day ), so now I know it wasn’t just the pregabalin , and try and stick to the slimming world plan , I’ll admit I’ve crept up a bit again though , must get serious again !! LOL
I’m on pregabalin 300mg twice daily and have been for a number of years, I havent gained weight on it and I’ve always watched my weight, I follow the slimming world plan and actually lost 2 stone whilst taking pregabalin. I think you should sit down and write down what your eating during a normal week, include everything and I think you will be surprised. This is often discussed and I know there are many who have put weight on whilst on it, it’s not the pregabalin putting the weight on, it’s making you feel better and your reaching for the wrong things, This is what my gp said to me when I first went on steroids, she said eat a carrot and not a chocolate bar.
On the other hand, I’m on it too and have put on weight since starting on it. Before the pregabalin I was losing weight without even thinking about it (don’t hit me!) and my diet hasn’t changed (if anything it’s healthier). Now, I’m not positive the pregabalin is the cause of this (and it’s not like it’s been masses of weight gain either), but it’s certainly a possibility. It might not cause weight gain for everyone, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t cause weight gain for anyone.
I’m going to try and come off it now (clean MRI and discharged from neuro, so going to see how things are without the medication) so we’ll see if it was the pregabalin for me or not. Maybe I’m just getting ‘old’.
Well you will have to report back if you loose weight when your off the pregabalin. As someone who puts weight on easily and has always watched their weight I didn’t see any increase when I went onto pregabalin, I did read the side effects before taking them and when i saw weight gain as one of them spoke to gp who said the tablet isn’t what puts on the weight it’s what it choose to eat so make healthy choices, which is basically why I follow slimming world, its healthy and you can eat loads.
both my nuero and gp say the same thing the weight gain is probably the pregabalin.on a strict diet no snacking can,t eat any chocolate or cheese due to migraines.i am probably eating the healthiest i have ever eatten pleanty of fruit and veg and white meat or fish only,
I was on Gabapentin for 3 years after i was first became ill in 2009. Before this i had lost 20lbs at weight watchers. Although i still went weight watchers, i put it all back on plus 8lb more. When i saw my new consultant in january ( thats when i was told i had ppms) he wanted me to come off them, this i have now done (i lost 7lbs in 2 weeks, without doing anything different) Since then i have been doing the terry wharls diet into my weight watcher plan (more or less the filling and healthy plan)I havenow lost 24 and 1/2 lbs in 11 weeks. I myself do believe that the drug was the main reason that i put on the weight, so as pregablin is more or less the same drug, i do think its a factor in your weight gain.
I have been on Pregabalin for over 7 years, I am very immobile these days, am not a big eater, dont eat chocholate or crisps, dont like the taste of sugar, I find fizzy drinks to gassy for me so prefer water nice and cold but still I have found my weight has doubled yes Doubled since being on these tablets, I mentioned this time and time again to my GP to be told worry about it we will deal with it when all your surgerys are complete. Know I get everytime I walk into an appointment with any other NHS doctor am I not concerned with how big I am, I have even been told I am fat by some foreign doctor (disgraceful) do they not read a patients medical notes before they make a comment like that. SO YES pregabalin does make you put on weight. I have even been to weight watcher and slimming world I found I couldnot keep up with all the food you had to eat it was far too much for me to consume over a day. Even had exercise in the hydro pool with physio as the weight gain started to act on my joints this hasn’t helped either. So in short it acts differently to everyone that takes it, some put on weight, some have no problems at all, but dont expect much help from the GP its their budget why they want to spend money when they can make you feel guilty and send you away telling you to eat every other day as a diet.
