My wife has recently deteriorated from progressive MS and I’m wondering if she should apply for PIP. We are not wealthy but not poor and have a reasonable amount of income from our pensions. But I believe my wife is eligible and the funding will help with her mobility costs. She is a very independent person so I suspect she feels others are much more worthy. But sometimes it just comes down to economics.
If in doubt, do it.
PIP isn’t means tested but is designed to “compensate” those suffering with a disease or disability. Whilst the money goes into the same collective pot, you could say I’m using mine to invest in a wet room plus other aids.
PIP, if awarded, comes in at different levels and is all about capabilities (or otherwise) at a practical level, not what label you give your condition. The application requires considerable preparation and will rely on corroboration from professional sources such as medical reports. Notably, MS is degenerative, so even if you don’t get it first time, you may qualify in a year or two.
Hi Simon, I believe you should make a PIP claim. DWP arent interested in a diagnosis so much as how the person is affected. I have PPMS and am reliant on hubby and carers for all personal care and outings.
I also use equipment ie shower chair/commode, profiling bed, ceiling hoist, electric wheelchair, tilting recliner.
Once you have received PIP forms, you are given a date by when they must be returned.
Then there’ll be either a face to face or telephone appointment. The whole process takes a few months.
Best wishes

There is a lot of information on the process of applying:- Personal Independence. Payment - Citizens Advice Bureau, Turn2us, Disability Rights Uk to name but a few.
It doesn’t cost anything to apply, just time. My tip would be to make sure you have all supporting medical evidence to hand so that you can reference anything that supports how your wife is affected on a daily basis.
From the point of ringing we had 4 weeks to return. You can ask for an extension if you get a bit behind with filling the form in.
Is there someone more deserving, your wife can’t think like that? The purpose of PIP is to help with extra care and mobility needs.
