Optic pallor and demyelination

I already have demyelination and see a neurologist for reviews. I saw an opthamologist and he said I have ‘mild bilateral temporal optic neural head pallor’. I saw him two years ago and there was nothing. He is going to write to the neurologist, but I’m concerned this may be a sign of MS. Does anyone know? Thanks.

I don’t know a great deal about this, but believe the pallor can be associated with demyelination - from any cause. So in somebody with known demyelination, I’m not sure whether it should come as a surprise or not.

Presumably, although you have confirmed demyelination, the evidence fell short of that required for a confirmed diagnosis of MS? In that case, it is possible this observation might count as a new episode, and thus fulfil the evidential criteria for MS.

Having demyelination at all does increase the chances of a subsequent MS diagnosis, as I’m sure you are aware. However, there must be proof the demyelination is either ongoing, or that there have been at least two distinct episodes, in different parts of the central nervous system.

Whether the pallor counts as new evidence, or just a manifestation of the existing, known demyelination would depend on where (in you, I mean - not which hospital) and when demyelination was diagnosed last time. If this is clearly a new episode, unrelated to the first, then yes, it would be additional evidence of MS.

Sorry,

Tina

Hi, as far as I know, Optic Pallor is what happens to the part of the optic nerve they can see at the back of your eye, after it has healed from a bout of optic neuritis. So depending on the current situation, as Tina says, it could be taken as a sign of further demyelination.

My last visit to the opthamologist was 2 years ago. It wasn’t mentioned then. I had the MRI which showed demyelination just before. Another MRI a couple of months ago thankfully showed no change. Hopefully it was linked to that and so isn’t any new evidence. Thanks those replies were helpful.

The neurologist hadn’t had the letter from the opthamologist. I showed him the note he’d written for me. He said that he’d send me for some visual tests. He changed his mind and said that he’d write to the opthamologist (who had said that the neurologist was the right person to be seeing). He said that the White spots hadn’t changed in a year, it hopefully wasn’t MS and discharged me. I don’t know why he is writing to the opthamologist if he is discharging me. He also ignored the fact that the optic pallor was diagnosed after the last MRI and hadn’t been picked up by the opthamologist before. I know I should be happy that I’ve been discharged, but his lack of confidence and changing his mind hasn’t helped.
