Nothing, Absolutely Nothing ?

So, as the title say’s, I’ve heard nothing absolutely nothing from this sites admin dept or from a mod in regards to the messages issues within my account.

I really cant do anymore !
I’ve added a thread listing the issues, sent screen shots via the thread and via messages to the mods and admin and sent emails direct to the society.
Yet, no help or replies ??
Is this new site actually monitored by humans anymore ?

Maybe, just maybe, my open opinions on the the set up & layout of this new site has rattled some cages and no help will be offered.
Maybe my messages are not getting through, but if thats the case why not offer help and answer via the threads I’ve posted ?
Oh well we’ll see ?
But sometimes silence speaks volumes !!!

Hello @jactac - as I mentioned on your previous post, we are looking in to the issue which you’ve raised regarding your private messages. We understand your frustration regarding this and I apologise for the time it is taking to fix this and lack of communication, but as this appears to not be a widespread fault, it is taking us time to investigate the reason behind this. I will try to update you on where we are with this by the end of today. Thanks, Oliver

Thank you Crazy Chick & MrsJ for your support.
Can I ask if you could send me a “test” message .
Bit of a long shot but I’m wondering if the problem is on old messages transferred from the old forum/site ?
Thanks

@ Oliver, thank you also for replying.

Really hope you can sort this, its so frustrating.

Thanks CC for sending a message.
I wanted to see if I can delete “new” messages, it was a long shot but no joy, the “delete topic” icon is stilling missing ?
It didnt work though when it was there

Thanks again CC

I have sent you a long message. you dont get option to delete but archive.

I have tried to give you the instructions. I did it several times, and it put all my selected messages into archive. You can then if you choose take them out of archive. Later when i have woken up i will see if we can then delete from archive.

PLEASE DO NOT GIVE UP.
we need our regulars.

hope this makes you all smile.

Hi CC.
Thanks for your great help & support.
I have noticed early on that we can move messages to the archive folder, but at one time the was also a “delete topic”, but it never actually worked, this was why I first contacted the Mods.
I noticed that very very old messages that had already been deleted from the old site had been transported across to our new accounts on this site which is when i tried to delete them but found that the delete option never worked.
A short while later the delete topic icon disappeared.

At least I now now that it’s not just my account that this option has disappeared from.
I really cant understand though why we cant delete messages that we no longer need or want ?

Thanks again CC for all your help & support.

I totally agree hun. its silly. I have looked and looked and cant see an option. maybe i am missing something as well lol. x

I think this goes some way to demonstrate that the delete function on the old site was never really a delete function and more of an archive function.

When this new site was created it is likely that everything on the old servers was moved across to new ones and this included the old deleted (“archived”) messages.

This could explain why they have re-appeared on your account. This is by no means the only reason and I have no inside knowledge, this is merely based on my experience of building, creating and updating websites.

It is also a good demonstration that anything ever posted to the internet can never fully be removed, with Caches, backups, mirrors et al it will always be somewhere that someone can retrieve it from.

No,
The delete function on the old site was exactly that, a delete function, in fact if you opted to delete a message you than had a second prompt asking if you are sure about deleting as the function could not be undone and the message was lost forever.
Which is is exactly what we need here.

It might have said delete on the button and it might have double checked that function with you but clearly it wasn’t deleted from the servers otherwise it couldn’t have come back onto your profile.

Just like the recycle bin on your desktop (Windows obviously) once you have deleted a file and confirmed that it it goes into the recycle bin. That file is no longer available from you files and folders and you won’t see or be able to access it again. If you look for it in your recycle bin though there it is, just sitting there waiting to be resurrected. Remove it from the recycle bin and it becomes more problematical to retrieve it, it can be done but it need specialist software and knowledge.

With the internet this is even more difficult to remove because of things like caches, backups, mirrors etc as I mentioned originally.

How about a look at the forums from 2005?

or maybe 2014
https://web.archive.org/web/20140625134959/http://mssociety.org.uk/forum

As I say, once something has been typed onto the internet it is there forever whether that was in the form of a private message or open forum.

The above two links re both from only one resource for looking at back at the internet through something called the Way Back machine

I fully understand that specialist software can retrieve deleted files ect, however as far as the casual user on the old MS Society site was concerned the messages were “permanently” deleted once the 2nd prompt was clicked.
The messages disappeared from site and could not be retrieved without what you call specialist software.
What we are discussing here is the basic deletion of message from our inbox and archived files/folders.
Clearly the messages ect are held somewhere in cyber space but this is not the issue we are talking about.
We just want to be able to delete old or not wanted messages from our inboxes, just like the old site.
If some geek wants to use some sort of “searchy” programme or software to read this stuff thats entirely up to them, but all we ask is for a delete button that makes messages “disappear” from our inboxes.

I’m not trying to start an argument or be a contrarian but the simple fact is that no matter what you thought you were doing nor what the old forum software told you were doing the messages were likely never deleted from the MS Society servers. In effect what you did was archive them even though you were told you were deleting them never to be seen again.

Clearly fully deleting wasn’t true as they have re-appeared when the new forum software has looked at what was available to it on the server and assigned that data to the user.

It is probably going to be the same sort of system now. You may click a button on the forum that says you are deleting them and the forum may tell you that this is what you are doing but the likelihood is your messages will be squirrelled away in the darkest depths of the forum. The forum Admins may well have known nothing about them and had no idea this was going to happen but it has and saying that you previously completely expunged them from the forum is clearly not true.

I am sure the techies and admins are working hard to create the function you are looking for and to make it do what it is you require. I was merely trying to explain the reasoning behind why you have found old messages re-appearing.

I thought I was being helpful in explaining this to try to better folks understanding of these things, it looks like I may have been misguided.

Please don’t shoot the messenger because you don’t like the message.

Sorry,
I didn’t mean to sound like I didn’t appreciate you advice, I really really do, honestly.

I understand that a “deleted” message is just hidden away somewhere and not totally gone forever/destroyed, but as a casual user of both the old and the new site it would be nice if messages could be “deleted” out of view on this site just as it did on the old site, all be it hidden away somewhere in cyber space/ servers.

Honestly I really did appreciate you advice and help.
Definitely no hard feelings on my behalf. :+1:

No worries, appreciate the reply thanks.

It can often be hard to spot the nuance and meaning on forums and life is too short to fall out with people.

Enjoy the rest of this glorious weather on this bank holiday.

Bit of an update, not that its good news.
You may of already noticed that the little spanner that appears when you select your messages which offered some options like move to archive has now disappeared.
So we cant do anything now with messages in our in boxes.

It now gone from not being able to messages at all, to being able to archive only, to being able to carry out absolutely nothing with unwanted messages.
