Not sure if I should be worried

Hi All

Been a while since I’ve been on here

The weathers heating up and I’m crying already (roll on autumn/winter)

But the title; I had my 6monthly telephone appointment with my MS nursey last week and she sent me for bloods

So I went for bloods on Tuesday, all good

Usually it’s a case of no news is good news. Well, she called me today and said my thyroid had flagged up on the test. She’s referred me to an endocrinologist

Then earlier I was looking online at what might cause this and it mentioned something about iodine

I take many vitamins daily, iodine being one of them. No one told me to take it, but I decided to start taking it about 6-12 months ago (for reasons I don’t remember)

I’m wondering if I’ve caused this myself. My last Lemtrada was in 2016

I called my GP, but as they haven’t received the referral letter, they won’t see me yet. And who knows how long it will take to see the endocrinologist

She also referred me (at the time of the appt) to a speech/swallowing specialist cos I told her I was struggling quite a lot with swallowing lately

I don’t know what to think really

Hi there. No idea if taking iodine supplements is good or bad but I see that NHS advice is that you do take iodine then 0. 5mg or less should be OK. More than half a milligram could cause thyroid problems!

From a quick look at Lemtrada it can sometimes cause Thyroid problems and , from what I can gather , in such cases the issue will be treated.

I wouldn’t worry, not at least you have something definite to worry about. I. think you should just try to put it out of your mind until you get to see the docs/specialists and find out what they think. Patience, I’m afraid!

Thyroid autoimmune disease is one of the known side effects of Lemtrada, for me it was hyperthyroidism, so I had to come off that IRT after only one round.

The endocrinologist put me on Carbimazole to calm the thyroids down, I’m still taking it three years later, until I have the thyroidectomy on the NHS --whenever that will be, who knows?

Btw, it’s not iodine supplements you should take, but Selenium supplements in order to tame the thyroids, or eating Brazil nuts is equally as good.
